BallenIsles Birds 
Bald Eagle by Rodney Cole
I had seen an eagle or two from time to time but several months ago a friend mentioned that he had seen a pair regularly on the golf course in the late afternoon. I had heard similar stories before and almost always it was someone seeing an osprey and thinking it was an eagle. But my friend insisted and I decided to check it out myself. So off I went, camera gear at the ready, to sit and wait. And as if on cue, one arrived and perched in a tree not 50 yards from my cart. We have been privileged to have several American bald eagles regularly visit our community. The sight of them never seems to grow old and as you can see from the video attached they are awesome representatives of majestic natural beauty.
The American Bald Eagle is about 3 feet long and has a wingspan of up to 8 feet. It has a distinctive white head and tail, a brown body and a yellow beak and feet. Eagles soar with wings held rigidly flat. It feeds on mainly fish which are often stolen from ospreys and will also eat small mammals, some water birds and carrion. They are skilled hunters able to capture waterfowl in flight and rabbits on the run. Nests are usually built in tall pine trees near water. They mate for life and will use the same nest is each year laying two or three eggs during late fall or winter. By contrast, Ospreys, which are about on foot smaller in size and have a 2 foot smaller wing span than an eagle, have a pronounced white front, black beak and legs and bent wings in flight.
Now you too can spot the difference and enjoy seeing both these grand raptors.
