May is half gone and the seasons seem to fly by.  Summer is coming, the car trailers continue arriving, there's a flurry of dates to say good-bye to our snowbird friends and poof, the summer dinner specials start!
  
Once again we feature an article by Rodney Cole about Bird Island on the BallenIsles East course.  We continue to have good news following the tragic lack of breeding two years ago.  Read all about the encouraging return of many mating pairs and watch a wonderful video.

BallenIsles Birds

It has been a brilliant year for Bird Island at BallenIsles.  During the breeding season Florida Fish and Wildlife are monitoring the colony every two weeks and counting the birds. This colony is the second largest wood stork breeding colony in all of South Florida and as such is considered to be of great significance to the well being of these endangered and protected birds. 
 
This year on Bird Island on the BallenIsles East Course, Florida Fish and Wildlife Regional Biologists and Habitat and Species Conservation personnel have reported at the end of March there were a total of 132 adult birds and some 68 nests.  There were 53 adult Wood Stork and 34 nests, 33 Great Egret and 13 nests, 14 Cormorant with 17 nests, 10 Anhinga with 4 nests and 1 Snowy Egret with a nest. 

Florida Fish and Wildlife in conjunction with FAU are also making a survey to establish what the Wood Storks are eating and from where this food comes. They are coming each week and collecting samples for evaluation. Their report will be available later this year.

How fortunate we are to have such a wonderful island right here for all to see and enjoy.  With continuing care and protection it should remain a marvelous part of our great community.  Our own bird island is truly worthy of a National Geographic special!
