The Birds of BallenIsles

A Rebirth - by Rodney Cole

Bird Island 2012                  Bird Island 2013                    Bird Island 2014

In 2013, the Island between the 2nd and 12th holes of the East Course, which for at least 20 years has been the rearing ground for many federally endangered and protected species of birds, had suffered a catastrophic interference to its environment. This had resulted in the Wood Storks, Great Blue Herons, Tri-colored Herons, Blue Herons, Great Egrets, Cattle Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Anhingas and Cormorants, all of whom had started to nest, totally abandoning the entire site.

Last year, the Florida Fish and Wildlife visited and made some recommendations on what steps should be taken to try and ensure that this year would be a success for all of the birds that have always, much to the delight of everyone, nested there successfully .

Considering that this colony has many species of wading and other birds including the federally endangered and protected Wood Storks, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Regional Biologists and Habitat and Species Conservation personnel again visited the site on March 5th.

As you may already all know significant numbers of birds have returned there to nest. Florida Fish and Wildlife identified that there are over 50 nests which are being used by,

     32 Wood Storks

     17 Great Egrets

     10 Anhinga

     75 Cormorants

     3 Snowy Egret

     2 Great Blue Heron

Florida Fish and Wildlife will be revisiting the site throughout the nesting season in order to monitor the site, to ensure that this nesting season will be successful and that in the future this island will continue to be as amazing as it used to be.

With reasonable care and protection this island should continue to be a natural wonder and enthrall all who see it
