Where the famous fished

Greetings!

Izaak Walton Chapel
Winchester Cathedral. Hampshire

It must be the end of the trout season because my mind has been straying, catching up on those thoughts and ideas that I have squirrelled away for just this moment.  During the year as I criss cross the counties of southern England there are constant reminders of how much fishing history is crammed into so little land mass: Frank Sawyer's home, Halford's Oakley Hut and Izaak Walton's tomb to randomly pick three that fall within a 15 mile radius.

And they are just a few of the fishing famous, rather than the famous who went fishing. For instance legend has it that General Eisenhower took time out from the D-Day preparations to fish the Mayfly hatch in 1944. But does anyone know where? Did Ernest Hemingway ever fish the chalkstreams? Where do our Royals, sportsmen, film stars and politicians fish?  Do any of the uber-rich own rivers, if so which ones? How about fishing feats - record fish, remarkable catches or extraordinary events. I, for instance, have no idea where the largest recorded river brown trout was caught.

So in an attempt gather as many locations around the British Isles I am throwing down a challenge to anyone who has any nugget of information that we can add to the Google map I have started. There are no rules as to what can or can't go in, but I feel in the spirit of what I do it should be either related to the game fish of trout, salmon, sea trout and grayling and fly fishing.

I have started the Google map with a few locations that sprang to mind. Feel free to add whatever you know directly via Google or if you prefer send me the information with the location and a few lines so I may add it.

I will update it in each subsequent Newsletter and add it to the web site in time.. Email me simon@fishingbreaks.co.uk and here is the link to the Google map.

PS If anyone with a technological bent knows a better way of making this map open source or more easily accessible do let me know.

OCTOBER RIVER REPORT & FEEDBACK WINNER

Hardy Bougle reel
Prize draw in November
Well, the weather broke and it is good to see the rivers starting to fill again. Remarkably the 80-100mph gales that swept along the coast on October 28th missed the chalkstreams leaving barely a trace in their wake. Two medium sized trees and a few branches was all we had to contend with. In fact by mid-morning the skies were bright blue and fish were feeding on the top ....

The winner of the Ultimate Chalkstream Fly Selection (6 fly packs and a copy of my Hatch Calendar) is Dave Beesley, a first time customer, which fished at Kimbridge Meadows.

Don't despair if you didn't win in October or any month thus far. November is the big one when everyone goes back in the draw for the end of season Hardy Bougle reel.

Have a good week.

Best wishes,
