Reservation for 500, please

One of my favorite moments working for the NVCC is when a restaurant joins the Chamber. Now please understand, we love all of our members equally, and I'm always as happy when a new member joins as I am when an existing member renews. We need all of you to be successful on your behalf. But when our Membership Director, Julie Lagadimas tells me that the British Beer Company just joined that means that now I can I eat there (and maybe have a beer too). Summer Shack just renewed. Great, guess where I'm having lunch. Lewis' is a member. I'll meet you there.

Chamber staff always preaches that you should do business with members and whenever possible we try to do the same. That means when I make decisions about where to spend my money I do consider whether a business is a member or not. So it bothers me when a restaurant that I like is not a member, because it means I cannot eat there. Of course, we are fortunate to have many restaurants as members. So many, in fact, that if I were to frequent all of them, I would either go broke or be visiting other members like Norwood Hospital or Brigham and Women's/Mass General Health Center.

Fortunately, there is a way to sample the fare from a large variety of local restaurants and caterers while also enjoying samples of beer, wine and mixed drinks all under one roof in, one gastronomically delightful evening. Flavors of the Neponset Valley is on Wednesday, March 20th from 5:30 to 9:00 pm at Showcase Live at Patriots Place in Foxboro.

Showcase Live is an exciting new venue for Flavors. If you have been to the Annual Meeting either of the last two years, you can appreciate why. The ambience and layout of Showcase will create a warm, intimate feeling while live music from "Jazz in the Air" will get the place hopping. In addition to the music, food and drink, we will have scores of items for you to bid on at our Silent Auction tables. From restaurant gift certificates to weekend getaways and sports tickets, you're sure to find something fun to bid on.

Like all Chamber events, Flavors is great for networking with other business people. However, I encourage you to reach out to your friends and family in addition to your co-workers and customers and invite them to join you on March 20th. Why? Several reasons; The first is they will have a great time (and thank you for it) and second they will be exposed to all the great dining and catering options we have available to us in the region and maybe discover a place that you hadn't been aware of and finally, Flavors is the ultimate in shopping locally. The vendors participating in Flavors are from the Neponset Valley region and are supporting the Chamber by participating. What better way to show your support to them and to support local business than by attending Flavors, having a ball and then going back to that restaurant that really impressed you that evening. I know I will and I can't do it alone. So please join me and hundreds of our best friends at Flavors of the Neponset Valley. Your taste buds will thank you!

EBC Student Seminar

Chamber Members to Meet with Local Students

Remember those high school days when it was time to consider your options following graduation? In other words, what were you going to do for the rest of your life? For 17 and 18 year-olds those can be daunting times. What if you make the wrong decision?

In order to help today's students face those decisions and understand the various educational and career options ahead of them, the Neponset Valley Chamber of Commerce's Education and Business Committee is planning a Student Career Seminar in conjunction with our local high schools. The Seminar will take place on Thursday, March 14 at UTI in Norwood from 9:00am-12:00pm.

We are expecting over 100 students from schools around the region. The program will begin with a keynote speaker and then students will break up into three groups. Each group will visit a panel of guest speakers from a variety of professions that will talk about their career path and the how they made decisions along the way. For many, it was not a straight line from that first decision in high school to where they are today.

"This program was a big hit last year, and we are pleased to be able to reach even more students this year thanks to UTI," said Chamber President, Tom O'Rourke.

The following Chamber members will be participating as speakers: Tom O' Leary - Senior Vice President, Blue Hills Bank, Rick Laccetti -Jasper White's Summer Shack, UTI Rep, Maria Battaglia - CMO/Founder ThriveHive, Alex McKinney -Owner, Marathon Sports Therapy, Najwa Murphy - GM, Residence Inn Norwood - Brian Johnson, Doc Shredding Corp.- Joanmarie Berry, Liberty Mutual Insurance.

Discounted Health Insurance for Small Businesses Available!

Chamber Health Coop Intro Video

Check out the savings before April 1 Renewal Period

Long-awaited discounts for small businesses are here. The Massachusetts Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (MACCE) recently introduced the Chamber Health Coop, a group purchasing program that makes health insurance more affordable for businesses with 1 to 50 full-time employees.

Any small business that belongs to the Neponset Valley Chamber is eligible to join the Chamber Health Coop.

Our members can save hundreds or thousands of dollars a year on their health insurance from Fallon Community Health Plan, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and Health New England, which are each discounting several of their plans. Fallon and Harvard Pilgrim are trimming rates by 3 percent, and Health New England by 5 percent. Businesses with a maximum of 50 employees who work 30 or more hours a week can now enroll for coverage beginning as soon August 1st.

The more covered lives a business has the more they can save. For example a company with 5 covered lives paying an average premium of $500 each could save $660 a year. A company with 10 covered lives could save $1,560 a year; 20 covered lives would save $3,360 a year and 50 covered lives would save $8,760 a year. These are based on individual plans. With family plans the savings add up even faster.

In addition to offering savings on health insurance plans, the Chamber Health Coop provides wellness programs to help employee's live healthier lives that in turn may help keep premium costs at bay. The health and wellness offering is free for all covered employees and their families.

 Advertise with the Chamber

Chamber of commerce websites are frequently sought out when potential customers are looking for products and services in a local area. In fact, a 2007 study (by the Schapiro group) showed that when potential customers know that a small business is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 44% more likely to think favorably of it, and 63% more likely to purchase goods or services from the company in the future. Chamber credibility is important and it positively enhances click through rates.

For the past four years, online local ad sales had a compound growth rate of 48 percent and are projected to reach $13.9 Billion in 2009 (+7.5%). At the same time, other forms of advertising are projected to decline 1.4%. Advertising continues to shift away from other media and more toward online opportunities because it is cost effective, measurable, flexible, targeted, and most importantly - it works!
