Free Class: Show vs Tell and Overwriting in Children's Fiction

Our gift to you.
Greetings!

You are in for a treat. We are starting the New Year off with a bang by offering you a free teleclass!

A few months ago, we took a survey on our blog and social networks and asked WOW subscribers what you wanted from us in terms of content, classes, etc., and many of you chimed in with "free class!" So, we figured, why not? This is our first time running a teleseminar, so bear with us as we dive into new territory, and we promise to make it fun and informative!

The free teleclass is this Tuesday, January 8, 2013 and is going to address "show vs tell and overwriting" in children's and YA fiction (although any fiction writer can benefit from the tips we are going to give). To attend, all you need to do is fill out the registration form and you will be given the number to call and the code. If you can't make it at that specific time, that's okay, just make sure you register and you will be able to download the recording for a period of time after the class ends.

WOW's fabulous editor and instructor Margo L. Dill will be presenting. We're pretty excited, and hope to see you there!

About the class:
One of the biggest issues Margo sees in children's writers' works-in-progress is overwriting. What often happens is the author tells readers how a character is feeling and then shows, too. Or a writer will tell readers in several different ways events that have occurred or important character traits. It can make writing stilted and pacing slow. In this one hour teleseminar, Margo will share the definitions of overwriting and what it means when people say, "Show, don't tell." She will share several examples of overwriting and telling and discuss ways to fix these, great examples of published children's novels where the author does it "right," and then finally watching out for certain pitfalls that can happen when you are concentrating too hard on showing and not telling. There will be time for questions at the end of the class.

Who should attend:
  • Writers working on a children's or YA fiction project, including short stories and novels
  • Writers who are interested in learning more about "Show vs Tell" or overwriting in fiction
