eHomily  by Pastor Ron...

The brilliant British writer, G.K. Chesterton, once wrote that if he were able to preach a sermon, and one only, it would be on fear.  This past Sunday I preached a sermon on fear.  I could tell by the attentiveness of the congregation and the responsiveness to the sermon that this is an important subject.   Here's why: You will never meet anyone who is not afraid of something.   It's true-and that includes you!

There is a place for every emotion, including fear, but God never intended for us to live in fear.  The Bible says, "God has not given us a spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind" (2 Timothy 1:7).  Yet many of us allow fear to get the upper hand.  That is why the principle of faith is so important for us to understand.

The disciples were once in a life-threatening storm on the Sea of Galilee.  After Jesus calmed the storm, He asked the disciples, "Why are you so afraid?  Do you still have no faith?"  (Mark 4:40).  Jesus is teaching here the remedy for the malady of fear.  It's faith!

There is no sense looking for other answers to your questions about fear.  Faith has always been and always will be God's answer.  If you are facing a frightening situation, learn that faith is the ultimate solution.  Whatever the cause of fear, the cure for fear is faith.  Someone wrote, "Fear knocked at the door; faith answered and no one was there."

So in the threatening storm you face now (financial, medical, relational, vocational, moral), choose faith over fear.  Do as the psalmist said, "When I am afraid, I will trust in you" (Psalm 56:3).  You may be saying to yourself, "But, I don't have much faith."  Then grow faith!  Here's how:

  • Grow it in the promises of scripture and the assurances of the faithfulness of God.  "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God"  (Romans 10:17).
  • Grow it in prayers to God.  "I sought the Lord, and he heard me and delivered me from all my fears" (Psalm 34:4).
  • Grow it in the experience of trusting the Lord with the faith that you now have so that you may have more faith.   "Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!" (Mark 9:24).  By its very nature, we usually begin by having the smallest of faith in the greatest of our trials.  But begin there for even smallest of faith in a Big God may produce the greatest of blessings.  Don't forget what Jesus promised faith could do if it were just the size of the mustard seed...So show faith and you will grow faith!

Finally, the good news is that as we trust in the Lord, He leads us in the right path for us through our troubling situation.  "Trust in the Lord with all your heart....in all your ways acknowledge him and he will direct your paths" (Proverbs 3:5-6).

So always remember this:

When fear comes, faith overcomes!
