eHomily  by Pastor Ron...

There is an old story about a man named Carl who was extremely wealthy and owned a great estate.  He enjoyed riding across the vast expanse of his land and savoring the thought of all that he possessed.

One day, as Carl was riding along, he topped a hill and saw in the distance one of his tenant farmers, an old man named Hans.  It was the noon hour and Hans had unfolded a cloth under a shade tree, set out his meager lunch and was about to eat.  But first he bowed his head and folded his hands to give thanks to God for his food.

Rich Carl watched as the old man prayed and could not help but notice the lunch was merely a slice of coarse bread and a piece of cheese.  When Hans finished praying and looked up, Carl sneeringly said, "If that's all I had to eat, I wouldn't even bother to pray."  Hans replied humbly, "It's enough for me and I am so very thankful for what God has provided."

Surprised by the old man's response, Carl turned his horse to ride away.  But before he could leave, old Hans said, "Wait a minute.  I need to tell you something."  He paused and continued, "I had a dream last night.  In my dream I saw a beautiful scene, and then I heard a voice saying, 'Tonight the richest man in the valley will die.'  And then the voice repeated those words, 'Tonight the richest man in the valley will die.'"

"Ridiculous!" said Carl as he rode toward home.  But as he was riding, the words of old Hans began to bother him, "Tonight the richest man in the valley will die!"  He could not get those words out of his mind.  To make matters worse, he began to feel heaviness in his chest and slight pain.  He wondered, "Could it be true?  Am I going to die tonight?"

When he reached home he called his doctor and told him about Old Hans' dream and of the discomfort and slight pain in his chest.  The doctor said, "Well, it doesn't sound like something you ought to be worrying about, but if it will make you feel better, I will come over and examine you."

So immediately the doctor came over to Carl's house to check him out.  After an examination, the doctor said, "Carl, you're as strong as a horse.   You have nothing to worry about!"  Carl answered, "Well, Doc, I feel mighty foolish that I listened to the old man's dream about the richest man in the valley dying tonight.  But I just wanted to be certain."

So, reassured, Carl went to bed.  The next morning a messenger came to the door of Carl's estate and knocked.  The door swung open and Carl stood there.  He listened as the messenger delivered the news: "Carl, last night old Hans died in his sleep."

It was then that it hit Carl what was meant by the dream.  Truly, the richest man in the valley died last night.

Jesus taught, "A man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions" (Luke 12:15).    A person is not rich because of the accumulation of material things but the investment of life in spiritual matters.  Jesus said, "Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven... (Matthew 6:20).  True prosperity is found through an investment in eternity.   Here's how you get rich:  "Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness... (Matthew 6:33).
