eHomily  by Pastor Ron...

The Bible says, "A good name is more desired than great riches" (Proverbs 22:1).   The proverb writer uses the word "name" to speak of the reputation of one's character. This is how we are known. It is primarily the by-product of our words, actions, and the spirit about us. It is how we are perceived by those around us and, especially, those who matter to us.

This past week we lost one in our Church Family and community who possessed a "good name." Dick Mohler was a great Christian! I join with many others who have felt this loss and shed some tears. We will all miss him even as we were all blessed by him. The shadow of his godly influence fell upon young and old alike.

Mr. Mohler epitomized before us all what it means to serve others with a spirit of humility in the Name of Christ. He truly lived daily the example of Jesus who washed the disciples' feet and then instructed them to do the same.

Jesus told His disciples, "The greatest among you will be your servant" (Matthew 23:11). Though we have been culturally conditioned to look for greatness in lesser things, here is where we find true greatness. Hershel Hobbs once said, "The world measures a man's greatness by the number who serve him. Heaven's yardstick measures a man by the number who are served by him." By that standard, Dick Mohler was a great man and I honor him as such. C.H. Spurgeon once said, "The kings among mankind, the happiest, the most powerful, the most honorable, will one day be, not the Alexanders, Caesars, and Napoleons, but the men akin to Him who washed the disciples' feet."

It is not my only intent in this article to "give honor to whom honor is due". There is another reason I write these words. It is to challenge each of us to rise to greatness in Christ's service. This is really how we honor men like Dick Mohler and others like him. In recent years we have lost some great men and women of God in our church community. They have given us an example that we should follow. Let us not squander the investment they have made in our lives. Seize this moment to take the flaming torch of Christ's light and carry it into the darkness. The same Lord who gave them strength of influence and ministry will do for us the same.

When you come to the end of your days, how will your name be remembered? Make it count for the Name which is greater than all!

In the Name of Jesus,

Pastor Ron
