When the eminent nineteenth century preacher, Charles Haddon Spurgeon, was a young boy he lived with his preacher grandfather who served as a pastor in Stambourne, England. One of his members became an embarrassment to him. It seems Elijah Roads made it a habit of going to the local pub and becoming intoxicated and unruly. This grieved the pastor greatly and he didn't know what to do about it.

Young Charles decided he would do something about it. He told his grandfather one day as he headed out the door, "I'll kill old Roads, that I will." But the grandfather preacher said to the lad, "Hush, hush! My dear you mustn't talk so; it's very wrong, you know, and you'll get taken up by the police, if you do anything wrong." Young Spurgeon answered, "I shall not do anything bad; but I'll kill him though, that I will."

Later that day the young Spurgeon walked in the house saying, "I've killed old Roads; he'll never grieve my dear grandpa any more." The grandfather answered and said, "My dear child, what have you done? Where have you been?" Charles answered, "I haven't been doing any harm, grandpa. I've been doing the Lord's work, that's all." The young boy would not say anything else about what had occurred.

That evening Elijah Roads showed up at his pastor's house and said to Spurgeon's grandfather, "I'm very sorry indeed, my dear pastor, to have caused you such grief and trouble. It was very wrong, I know; but I have always loved you, and wouldn't have done it if I'd only thought." He went on to explain that he was sitting there having a beer when the young Spurgeon showed up at the pub and confronted him saying, "What doest thou here, Elijah? Sitting with the ungodly and you a member of the church and breaking your pastor's heart. I'm ashamed of you! I wouldn't break my pastor's heart-I'm sure!" Then, he said, the young Spurgeon turned and walked away.

Old Roads proceeded to tell his pastor that what the young child had said was true. Then he explained, in his own words, what took place. He said, "I went and cast myself down before the Lord, confessing my sin and begging for forgiveness. And I do know and believe the Lord in mercy pardoned me; and now I've come to ask you to forgive me, and I'll never grieve you any more, my dear pastor."

Well, biographers of Spurgeon's life have documented that Elijah Roads went on to live a godly life and never embarrassed his pastor again, as he promised. I suppose you could say that young Spurgeon "killed him" indeed, at least, the old him. And Elijah Roads took responsibility for his actions and, by God's grace, found forgiveness and a changed life.

The way to kill off the old you-the part of you that's disobedient to God is through genuine repentance. There is no other resolution for sin and no other path to restoration. Fortunately, God's amazing grace provides such a transformation for sinners such as you and me! Maybe it's time to "kill off" some bad habits in our lives...

Ron
