Digital Video Editing Instructor on How SMWW Can Help You!

SMWW's Digital Video Editing Course is a great way to get into the a scouting department for a professional basketball team. We caught up with instructor, Joshua Keith-Url, to find out how this course can help you land a job in sports.

What is your background in DVE?

JKU: I took the Digital Video Editing course in early 2010 and was able to complete my coursework and help my fellow students complete the course. Because of the recommendations of several people I was offered the open Digital Video Editing instructor position and have been teaching the course since late 2010. Additionally I have worked for Synergy Sports Technology since early 2011 as a Phase 2 Logger for one season and now as a member of Synergy Sports Operations this season.

What can students expect to learn in the course?

JKU: Students can expect to learn how to utilize video in coaching and scouting basketball. We will explore the responsibilities of those in a team's video department. The students will also learn how to use the Synergy Sports interface all of the NBA, WNBA, D League, many International, and hundreds of NCAA teams use every day.

Why does this course make someone more likely to get a job in sports?

As mentioned above the vast majority of higher level basketball organizations use Synergy Sports Technology on a daily basis. Having a familiarity and comfort level with Synergy Sports will help differentiate students from the other applicants who do not. Having experience with the Synergy Sports that teams use is a benefit to the student's resume.

You've been to many DVE departments of pro teams, what's the daily work like?

JKU: The video departments of pro teams are home to exceptional workers and plenty of TV screens and video equipment. Working in the video department is hard work that entails long hours but it is worth it as nothing helps you develop and refine your basketball knowledge as being immersed in video. This is why we have seen so many people from the video department going on to coach or work in the front office at the highest levels.

You work closely with the NY Knicks VP of Basketball Ops, Mark Warkentien. What are his insights on the importance of a DVE department for a pro team?

JKU: Mark believes the use of video and Synergy is a valuable addition to a front office and coaching staff's toolbox. Mark believes in getting at least 1% better every day and he believes working with video and Synergy can help people get that 1% better every day.

Why would you suggest someone take this course?

JKU: If someone wants to get into coaching or scouting at the highest level and doesn't have pro playing experience or friends who happen to own a team, the video department is the quickest way for them to realize those dreams. The Digital Video Editing course helps give you insights into the video department as well as the skills and experience to help differentiate yourself from other applicants with similar backgrounds.

Differentiate yourself by enhancing your resume with sports specific skills. The next Digital Video Editing begins November 18th.
