Greetings!
Last week we published the Statement in Defense of Academic Freedom and a Plural Society by Hokusei University Support Group, in support of journalism professor Uemura Takeshi who has been criticized over his reporting on the comfort women issue. This week David McNeill furthers the discussion with a transcription, translation and video of his important interview of Matsumoto Masayoshi, a former medical attendant in the Japanese army with intimate knowledge of the system of military sexual slavery. Now 92, Matsumoto tells of what he saw decades ago, concluding: "If we don't face our past, we're bound to repeat the same mistakes."
