Mobile life

We're becoming used to having lots of information at our fingertips through our smartphones. Whether it's directions to a specific address, breaking news, fun updates from friends and family and, of course, information about our bank accounts, we have the ability to find out what we need to know with a couple quick taps.

We have two pieces of news to share that will add to the ability to better manage your banking with the use of your smartphone. First, in a few months, we'll be introducing a new feature to our mobile banking app - mobile deposit capture. This will give Guthrie County State Bank mobile banking customers the ability to use our mobile banking app to take a picture of the front and back of a check you would like to deposit with your smartphone. We'll be sharing more details soon!

Another new feature for smartphone users is SHAZAM BOLT$. This security product keeps tabs on the usage of your debit card, alerting you to suspicious or high risk transactions. Check out the article below for more information and download this free app today!

Should you have any questions about the newsletter or any of the information featured, please connect with us at contact@gcsbank.com and thank you for reading.

The lower left corner (white walls) of this picture shows the new future location of Guthrie County State Bank in Guthrie Center. The street on the left side is State Street (Highway 44), in the top left corner is the current bank location and along the bottom of the picture is Highway 25.This picture was taken mid-July.

The Walls are Going Up!

The corner of State Street and Highway 25 in Guthrie Center is starting to look quite different as the new location of Guthrie County State Bank moves along in the construction process. The walls of the lower level are up and we are able to better imagine what the finished building will look like. We are still looking at an early 2016 move-in date. The City of Guthrie Center will take over the current building as the new City Hall.

The new building will incorporate efficient spaces for our customers' banking needs and some new features such as palm-scanned secure safe deposit boxes and a large meeting room to be used for our Heritage Club meetings and GCSB Investment Center training and seminars.

Lock Down Your Debit Card with SHAZAM BOLT$

Cyber criminals make millions of attempts to steal consumer's personal information online every year. A leading security company reports, nearly a third of all those attacks target your bank information in the form of Phishing. Criminals try to get your account number and other personal information by leading you to a seemingly legitimate link or email attachment, or simply asking for it.

Guthrie County State Bank is offering you a new tool to detect fraud on your debit card account. The SHAZAM BOLT$ App for your iPhone or Android smartphone allows you to monitor your accounts for fraud in real time.

With the SHAZAM BOLT$ app, you can automatically receive 24/7 alerts on your smartphone, tablet or home computer whenever a suspicious debit card purchase is made. Whether it's Internet orders, a purchase for a large amount or transactions in foreign countries - you customize the alert!

When you receive an alert on your SHAZAM BOLT$, you simply check the transaction. If the purchase isn't valid, call us right away and we'll put a stop to the fraud. It's like having a high-tech, early warning system at your disposal every minute of every day.

Here are a few other tips to avoid fraud:

  • Only visit and do business with established companies you have an existing relationship with online.
  • Be suspicious of unsolicited emails. Emails or phone calls that pressure you to "respond immediately" should raise a red flag. Take the time to make sure any contact is legitimate.
  • Never give your account number, PIN, or any other personal information to anyone.
  • Check your accounts frequently with our GCSB Mobile Banking or Internet Banking services.
  • Call us or just fill out this form on our website if you will be traveling  or using your card in any unusual way.
  • Make sure your current address and phone number are on file at Guthrie County State Bank.
  • If your card is lost or stolen, contact Guthrie County State Bank or Shazam Customer Service 800-383-8000 immediately.

We are hiring!

Guthrie County State Bank is looking for two new team members for the position of Loan Officer. We are hiring one Loan Officer in each of our two locations - Guthrie Center and Panora, Iowa. We are seeking applicants who are self-starters, who thrive on building customer and colleague relationships and who would enjoy living and working in a small community with access to the amenities of an urban area. The Loan Officers will work with customers to apply for consumer loans and mortgage loans as well as open and maintain new deposit accounts. These two positions will report to the chief loan officer. These positions will have frequent customer interaction, will conduct credit analysis and prepare all documentation for loans and new deposit accounts as directed by the policies of the organization and oversight entities. Persons in these positions will call on existing and prospective customers; ensure customer credit integrity and monitor accounts for stability. For more information on the requirements and benefits of these positions, visit our website.

Bank With Benefits

If you are 55 or better with one of a variety of qualifying accounts at Guthrie County State Bank, you might be missing out on the benefits available by joining the GCSB Heritage Club. In addition to quarterly social events, educational opportunities and convenient day trips, the Heritage Club plans several domestic and international trips for members each year. A quarterly e-newsletter keeps members updated on upcoming events and tips for better financial management. Our members enjoy travel, entertainment, a free checking account and checks, and other free services. We asked a few of our current members to tell us what they enjoy about their membership.

"We have enjoyed our travels with Guthrie County State Bank Heritage Club. Kim and Linda do a tremendous job of planning the itineraries and putting together excellent travel adventures for our group," said Gary and Nancy Coleman. "Every detail such as air, hotels, transportation, guided tours, meals, tickets, etc. is taken care of ensuring that we have an outstanding trip. Kim and Linda take care of our group with great humor and fun making sure everyone is safe and having a good time. We have not been disappointed in any trip we have taken with the Guthrie County State Bank Heritage Club and are always looking forward to learning about the next travel destination."

Becky Carico is a 10-year GCSB Heritage Club member and likes the unique itinerary surprises of the planned trips.
GCSB Heritage Club member, Becky Carico, has been a member for about 10 years and has traveled both with her husband and on her own with friends including an Alaskan cruise and another up the eastern coast of the United States. Becky finds the unexpected stops in the itinerary to be the ones she enjoys the most.

"The one I remember the most was a visit to a tea room in Georgia," said Becky. "It felt like a visit to a southern home with southern hospitality. This was off the beaten path that we would never have found on our own. I would recommend the benefits of the group to anyone."

The next Heritage Club social event is Monday, August 10, at 10:00 a.m. at the Christian Church in Guthrie Center. Our speakers will be the Guthrie County Arts Council telling us about their programs and Liz Little, from SHAZAM, with tips on how to avoid fraud.
