USTA Tennessee will host their 2013 Annual Meeting on Friday, February 7 - Sunday, February 9, 2014 at the Holiday Inn Select Vanderbilt, Nashville, TN.

 

USTA Tennessee is excited to welcome the following guests who will be part of this special weekend.

TEAM TENNESSEE ATTENDS SOUTHERN ANNUAL MEETING IN ATLANTA, GEORGIA USTA Tennessee recently attended the Southern Annual Meeting in Atlanta held Friday, January 17, 2014 - Sunday, January 19, 2014. This annual event is attended by Board members, Committee members and Sectional and State staff.

  

Southern Patrons Tennis Foundation Grants and Scholarships Now Available.

The Southern Tennis Patrons Foundation (STPF) is committed to tennis and education at the local level and has established community tennis grants available to programs throughout the USTA Southern Section. These two-year grants are provided to promote growth and to assist community tennis associations and other organizations in initiating and/or expanding USTA tennis programming at the grass roots level and educating the public on sportsmanship, character and the health benefits tennis provides.


The Southern Tennis Patrons Foundation provides two $2,000 college scholarships that are awarded to players from the Southern Section who apply for but do not receive USTA Serves college scholarships. Recipients must apply for the USTA Serves scholarships and meet other criteria to be considered. The deadline is Feb. 21, 2014.

Lady Vols Join Juniors at the CTC hosted by Knoxville Racquet Club

 

   In January , Knoxville Racquet Club hosted a Competitive Training Center for area juniors. Players had the opportunity to practice with the University of Tennessee Women's Tennis team coached by Mike Patrick.
and Sonia Hahn-Patrick.
Thank you to Scott Patrick and the staff of the Knoxville Racquet Club for hosting this great event, and thank you to the women of the UT Tennis Team, and Coaches Mike Patrick and Sonia Hahn-Patrick for volunteering their time to help junior players and enhance the CTC programming.
 

 

Tennessee Juniors compete and win!
Junior Tournament Results
This month, many of our top junior players from the state competed in the Southern Winter Level 1 Championships that was held in four locations throughout the Southern Section.  This tournament was a National Level 3 event and each draw consisted of 128 players.

We would like to congratulate all Tennessee players who participated in this event and acknowledge a few players for their outstanding results:
  • Kenya Jones (Memphis) placed 3rd in Girls 18s singles.  
  • Danielle Vines (Elizabethton) placed 3rd in both Girls 16s singles and doubles with partner Grace Jennings from Kentucky.
  • Ally Bojczuk (Franklin) and Claire Sullivan (Memphis) teamed-up and placed 4th in Girls 16s doubles.
  • Somer Henry (Franklin) was the 1st place winner in Girls 14s doubles with partner Hannah Hutchings of Georgia.

USTA Tennessee holds schools workshops in Upper East Tennessee.
USTA schools Workshops
In January, USTA TN held workshops for teachers in Kingsport and Bristol. These schools workshops introduce teachers and coaches to the great game of tennis. The workshops are designed to train teachers to include tennis as part of their physical education and health curriculum. Schools may register to receive free equipment packages. Look for USTA tennis programming in schools in Bristol and Kingsport. Thank you area META volunteers for assisting with these events.

Blain Smith Named PTR Tennessee Member of the Year
Blain Smith, of Brentwood, Tennessee, has been named PTR Member of the Year for the State. This award is
presented to a PTR member in the United States who has shown dedication and diligence in promoting and supporting tennis and PTR. 

Smith is a 22 year employee of the Metro Board of Parks/Centennial Tennis Center in Nashville. He also serves on the Board of Tennis Nashville and 10 & Under Junior Competition Committee for the State. A PTR member since 1996, Smith is a strong proponent of continuing education and professional
development for tennis teachers and coaches. In 2013, he was instrumental in organizing and promoting a PTR 10 & Under
Certification Workshop in Nashville that grew to be one of the organization's most well attended. Smith has earned the Professional rating in two PTR of the certification pathways: 10 & Under and Adult Development.
