Ventura County 2015

Regional Economic Analysis Profile (REAP)

You are invited to attend the WDB meeting on December 17th to hear a presentation by Angel Rodriguez, Labor Market Information Division Research Manager in Sacramento, and a WDB member discussion on the newly released REAP report on occupational data in Ventura County. Before the meeting, take a look at the sector data in the report.

Good for Business
Simi Valley Assistant City Manager and WDB Outreach Chair, Brian Gabler, doesn't shy away from stating the obvious: "When asked to name business-friendly states, California is probably not high on your list. Unquestionably, there are many regulations here---- some put in place for very good reasons, others for crazy reasons. Yet despite the perception by some that it's impossible to do business in California, especially in the manufacturing sector, there is plenty of evidence to prove otherwise." Brian also says that there is another side to the coin, including quality of life and the "wealth of organizations that can provide assistance to businesses...." Welcome New Board Members
Byron Lindros and Captain Douglas King join the WDB on December 15th. Lindros is director of engineering/capital projects at Amgen. Active in WDB manufacturing sector work for two years, he currently chairs the WDB Manufacturing Roundtable of Ventura County and believes, "we need to raise awareness of the value that manufacturing brings to our community, and to encourage students to consider manufacturing as a career pathway. The WDB is a key facilitator in helping to develop the relevant and ready workforce we need for Ventura County to compete." King is chief staff officer at Naval Base Ventura County. "I would like to ensure that the Navy is an active part of the countywide effort to develop and maintain a highly capable and productive workforce," says King. "The WDB is important to Ventura County because through its regional strategies, proper resources can be applied to develop the right skills for local industry to fill high-demand jobs."

Partner Success Story: PathPoint and Nicole
At 17, Nicole Frazier was 25 credits short of a high school diploma and was living in a halfway house. She enrolled in the WDB-supported Youth Networked Services program at PathPoint and finished her diploma within one semester. At the same time, she interned at a local restaurant to gain work experience and save money. With an offer of permanent unsubsidized employment at that same restaurant, Nicole pursued a career as a Certified Nursing Assistant and transitioned to working for an in-home care agency, working with the sick and elderly. She says, "PathPoint helped me so much. If you put in the work to reach your goals, YNS will get you the help that you need!"
