Virginia Values Veterans (V3)
First Anniversary Summit and Conference
June 12, 2013 in Richmond, VA
Joseph Barto III, Founder and President of TMG, Inc.; Paul Galanti, Commissioner, Virginia Department of Veteran Services; Shanna Christian; Jason Snyder; Kevin Lanius; Barbara Cormier; Thomas Auer, Ceo, Bon Secours Medical Group (Host Sponsor)
The First Annual V3 Conference and Summit was held at the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, and brought together over 200 employer representatives from all over the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Keynote speakers included: Bob McDonnell, Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia; US Senator Mark Warner; Delegate Kirk Cox, Virginia House Majority Leader; and Cathy Wilson, Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Veteran Services.

The goal of the V3 program is to re-capitalize the veteran workforce to support Virginia as the best state to do business in the United States. Virginia is home to 21 military bases and installations, and there are over 575,000 veterans currently eligible for civilian jobs in the state. Our total unemployment in Virginia as of April 2013 is 5.2%; however, the veteran unemployment rate is significantly higher at 7%.

During the conference, employers were recognized for their commitments to hire and retain veterans. Accepting the Bronze Level Certification award on behalf of Securitas were Area Human Resources Manager Shanna Christian and Area Vice President Joel Gininger to represent Northern Virginia, Area Human Resources Manager (and Army veteran) Barbara Cormier and Area Vice President Jason Snyder to represent Southern Virginia, and Vice President of Human Resources Kevin Lanius to represent the Mid-Atlantic Region.

Security Awareness

Whether it's a building fire, a break-in, a suspicious package, or a medical emergency what saves lives and property is pre-planning, teamwork, and actively promoting an attitude
of security awareness.

Security awareness is a specific state of mind that affects everyday attitudes and behaviors. And that awareness can help reduce security risks.

You expect security professionals to be ever-vigilant - in fact, vigilance is one of Securitas' core values. But by also encouraging each employee to be vigilant, the overall effectiveness of security operations can be  significantly enhanced.

Be Safe this Independence Day!

Using consumer fireworks can be safe if a few common sense rules are followed, according to the National Council on Fireworks Safety. We have shared some safety tips below, but for a full list please visit fireworkssafety.org

Know your fireworks; read the warning labels and performance descriptions before igniting.

Have a designated shooter to organize and shoot your family show.

Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Save your alcohol for after the show.

Always have water ready if you are shooting fireworks.

Wear safety glasses whenever using fireworks.

Never relight a "dud" firework. Wait 20 minutes then soak it in a bucket of water.

Soak spent fireworks with water before placing them in an outdoor garbage can.

Obey local laws. The following are legal in the Commonwealth of Virginia:
  • Sparklers
  • Smoke and Punk
  • Fountains
  • Novelties
  • Crackle and Strobe
  • Wheels and Spinners
The following varieties of fireworks are legal in Virginia with a permit only.
  • Bottle Rockets
  • Sky Rockets
  • Roman Candles
  • Firecrackers
  • Missiles
  • Parachutes
  • Sky Flyers
  • Display Shells
  • Aerial Items (Cakes)

According to the latest FBI crime statistics, a residential burglary occurs every 22 seconds in theUnited States. And most of them occur during daylight hours, when occupants are away at work, at school or running errands. Moreover, home burglaries peak in the summer months when people are more likely to be away from home for extended periods of time, or leave windows open for ventilation.

So, before you turn your mind toward those lazy, hazy, crazy days, take a few moments to review these tips on how to help prevent your home from becoming a burglar's target.
