"The poor you will have with you always"

This passage, which is familiar to most of us, can be found in three of the Gospel's spoken from the lips of Jesus.  For some it could be understood that it is futile to help the poor but for others it is a call to be in solidarity with the them.  This is certainly what Jesus meant and so the most important word in this passage is "with."

This Lent we at Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Monterey invite you to join us as we draw ever closer to the poor and marginalized.  We do this not only to assist them but also with the understanding that by being in relationship with them we can be blessed.  Pope Francis reminds us that the poor have gifts to offer us - All we need to do is draw near.

We invite you to watch the message Pope Francis delivered to all of us in the United States who partner with Catholic Charities.  May his words encourage you.  May you always know of our gratitude for your partnership with us at Catholic Charities Diocese of Monterey.
