NORTH MONTEREY COUNTY SAFE

DRINKING WATER PROJECT

IS YOUR FAMILY AFFECTED BY NITRATE CONTAMINATION IN YOUR DRINKING WATER?

North Monterey County residents who depend on state and local water systems under 15 connections are at high risk of nitrate contamination in their drinking water. The Environmental Justice Coalition for Water is outreaching to residents who may be eligible for FREE drinking water.

Eligible north Monterey County residents include:

  • those whose water systems or wells test above the nitrate drinking water standard (45mg/L)
  • their homes have a total annual household income less than $48,000

As part of the safe drinking water project, EJCW will provide the following services for FREE:

  • provide community workshops on nitrate contamination health risks
  • work with residents and communities to develop a short term solution that will guarantee safe drinking water

What is Nitrate?

Nitrate is a chemical that is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. Contamination comes from irrigated agriculture, livestock waste, septic tanks and sewer systems.
