Tee time is 1pm and cocktails and dinner start at 5:30pm when the Armonk Chamber of Commerce celebrates the good citizenship (and general bonhomie) of Sam Morell, its 2015 Citizen of the Year. The date is Tuesday, May 12 and the place is the Whippoorwill Club in Armonk. Sam is the founder of the Small Town Theatre Company. If you missed the Mother's Day Plant Sales, the 24th annual Lasdon Park Plant Sale offers a selection of plants, shrubs, trees and garden items in a day long celebration that includes music and refreshments. Specialties include native plants, butterfly attracters, agro-forestry plants and trees to grow within wooded areas, berries and fruit plants, dwarf trees, herbs, vegetables, flowering plants and planters. More events. 

You can still register for the 28th running of the New Castle 10K Road Race and Kids Fun Run this Sunday. This challenging course runs from Town Hall through some of Chappaqua's most scenic landscapes. You'll get a police escort, water stations and a sag wagon (need it.) More.

The Running Goddess 5K race at Lasdon Park in Katonah supports the Running Goddess Scholarship Fund that provides money to female high school graduates in Westchester and Putnam counties who are interested in pursuing a math, science or technology education. Pictured here is Allyson Winter and her mom. Allyson was last year's Running Goddess Scholarship winner for her work researching the effect of psychology on the recovery of breast cancer patients. She represented Westchester County at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair and now attends Providence College. Run here.

Historic Hudson Valley's Lightscapes at Philipsburg Manor highlights our What To Do: With the Kids calendar for May. This event, produced by the creators of The Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze, is a nighttime display of sculptured lights that runs from May 1-31. Lightscapes is just one of 18 activities we list from the local farms to the Long Island Sound and the Bronx River Parkway. Plus carnival season begins in & around town.

Carnival season is upon us. Up first, the St. Patrick's Carnival, one of the state's biggest, raises money for the parish's educational ministries. With full-scale carnival rides, a Ferris Wheel, bumper cars, carnival games, (we love to throw darts and pop the balloons), sausage and peppers, cotton candy and a big-prize raffle. Philipsburg Manor's Pinkster Day recreates this 17th century African-American spring celebration with a colonial-style festival of music, dance and food. Including presentations of drumming, traditional dance and African folktales. Phillipsburg Manor is the only living museum dedicated to the history of slavery in the northern colonies. It is one of six local sites of the National Trust for Historic Preservation managed by Historic Hudson Valley. Read more.

This event is open to the community, FREE of charge, and great fun for kids of all ages. The Spring Fling features lots of great outdoor activities, including bounce castles, inflatable obstacle course, bungee run, and gaga courts. Yorktown Heights' Hilltop Hanover Farm Memorial Day Farm Fest features a plant sale, a farm stand, vendors, kids events, tours, hiking over 3.5 miles of woodland trails, chickens and goats, food, and more! The farm features demonstration models for backyard farming, animal management, rainwater harvesting, organic composting, and green-roof technology. With a cluck cluck here, and a cluck cluck there ...

Stock car racing at its best featuring the Trans Am Series and the Royals Car Show! On Friday and Saturday, the Trans Am Series features big, bad and fast Mustangs, Camaros and Challengers. On Sunday, the Royals Car Show draws 200-400 vehicles from rare sports cars to muscle cars from the 60s and 70s. More stuff to do.

May is a funny month in & around our towns. Bob Newhart (no introduction necessary) brings his "button down mind" to Paramount Hudson Valley on Sat, 5/16. The Ladies of Laughter Funny and Fabulous Tour comes to Westchester Community College on May 23. On June 6, the Emelin Theatre presents Laughing Out Loud with Erik Rivera, a rising star of NY comedy, and Ophira Eisenberg, the host of NPR's and WNYC's weekly trivia, puzzle and game show Ask Me Another. More Comedy here.

This event is organized by the newly formed non-profit Stayin' Alive that raises funds for North Castle First Responders. It features a 5K run followed by a fun run for kids. The Stayin' Alive 5k will be a run/walk around Windmill Club and through the Windmill neighborhood. The Fun Run will be 1 lap around Windmill Lake. Read more.
