Rare French Red Lacquer
The red Louis XV Chinoiserie lacquer commode is an exotic flower in the world of French commodes. Its serpentine front and ormolu mounts create the frame for the finely painted gilt Chinese landscape with raised figures. The conforming heavy molded edge marble is unusual with the rich interplay of dark reds, verde, and white veins. Below arching aprons terminate in slender, graceful cabriole legs with ormolu at each foot. Some restoration has been done years ago to the finish as well as he case. Professional photos before and after are on hand. Provenance is also on available with a 130+ year history of ownership in one family. H. 34", w. 38", d. 21". Priced at $9500. Below, a glimpse of the marble.
Accessories above include two Chinese export fluted oval bowls, 19th century, each about 14" by 10". The smaller shell shaped bowl is 5.5" by 5". The Thai Buddha is of gilded wood with an inscribed plinth. H. 9.5", $150.
