Hello,
The ship above, the Abydus, sailed in the last half of the 19th century under the British red flag. Painted by Thomas de Simmone or one of his contemporaries, this carefully painted gouache shows strong, brilliant colors found typically in this medium. In a storm as well as on a calm sea, the ship is outlined by a reverse painted mat and birdeye ogee frame with gilt detail. 18.75" x 25" overall. They are $900 each and sold only as a pair. Below, group of prize chicken parades for this talented painter in this 19th century oil on canvas. A later walnut frame with a gilt liner holds this colorful and detailed country scene. 16" x 21.5" overall. $1195.

This fine still life may remind you of Charles Peale for its unique realistic style. Further, this 19th century piece is apparently on a walnut board which is hand planed and uses a Peale device, a pewter plate, as an element. Original gilt framing, 12.5" x 16.5. Lovely quality in American 19th century art at $1125.
