An outstanding English Regency table circa 1810.
On this table quill-work is done with black ink and some leafage colored on the background of a light hardwood. This elegant lift top piece was likely a sewing stand or work table. Each surface, even the interior lids have detailed scenes of the Orient. The various vignettes include architecture (pagodas and others), Chinese fence-work in many designs, bridges, dentils, scrolls, costumed figures, and boats (rowboats, sailboats). The interior is lined with original light blue paper. No major repair, some wear. H. 28", w.18.5", d.15". A delightful value at $1095.
This table is featured in one of the rooms shown in Dowling's Classical Interiors. Further excellent provenance is available.
