Each week we try to add tempting pieces to the collection. Today I'm pleased to offer this most interesting and coloful picnic scene. At center it appears that a politician offers his views to an eager circle. Around him, fish cooked on the open fire and beer chilled with block ice are being served. A squirrel sits in a tree while two doves fly overhead. Over 65 figures near and far are depicted. Period dress is carefully portrayed along with canoes, a sailboat, and a steam sidewheeler on the river with a nearby village in sight. Overall size is 27" by 35" in a 19th century gilt frame. Oil on canvas mounted on board, blacklight showing only minor touch ins, and signed and dated F. W. Wolfe (sic?)1881 on the tree trunk at right. Large views supplied on request. $6000.
