Views of the ruins of ancient Rome are a favorite. above, we have discovered a large 18th or early 19th century oil on canvas which may be a folly, perfectly extant only in the mind of the painter. Done in the style of Panini, the scene is populated with colorful figures to enhance the topical interest and provide scale to the ruins. Two soldiers rest in the foreground while giving directions noble couple. close by a dog wanders, other figures are seen in conversation, and a shepherd leads his flock in the distance.
The decaying arches offer a wonderful reference to the excitement in this period for classical composition and detail, Note the cornices, columns and arches that appear as allusions in furniture and decorative arts of the era.
We retained the lovely old molded frame. This is a large piece. With frame, 41"h. x 57"w.
The set of three leather covered chairs below are also Italian and restored 18th century pieces. The size is 45"h. by 20"w. and priced at $1150 for the three. Use the pair flanking the table and save the third for use as a desk chair.
Our recent find, a walnut Baroque Italian refectory table in old finish with tremendous robust turnings with a stretcher base. Restored. 45"W x 20"D x 31"H. $1950.
