As hard as it was to see our "disappointing" summer come to end, we cannot complain about the first week of fall. Last week was just lovely and I hope we have more of that weather to come.

I know the nice weather makes it hard to finish things in the garden but remember it's more fun doing it nice weather vs cold rainy weather.

At our house it's time to close the pool and put my veggie garden pots to bed. I have to say my veggies were a disappointment this season. I think the lack of heat really stunted the season, whether your garden was in pots or not. I am looking forward to doing a bit more reading this winter to learn more about growing vegetables in pots.

I kept this month's article short and quick and to the point with a handy checklist of things you can do this fall to take care of your garden. Planting bulbs and garlic are probably the ones that will have the most impact.
If you would like bulbs planted in your garden this fall for some spring colour give me a call and we can discuss my Bulb Planting service. I will make sure I plant the right ones for the right area of your garden.

Here's to a glorious fall!

All the best,

Joanne

Tips For October

1. Now is a great time to divide your hostas.

2. Refrain from trimming Japanese Maples or Evergreens like cedars and yews.

3. Now is the best time to plant garlic in your garden in a sunny spot, even amongst your shrubs.  Here's my video on how to do it.

  • Divide and move perennials.
  • Time to plant spring bulbs. Remember, squirrels don't like Daffodils or Alliums.
  • This is a great time to plant trees and shrubs.
  • Keep an eye on rainfall; if it is low, make sure newly planted material and evergreens are well watered until the first frost.
  • Protect young trees from mice and rabbit damage by wrapping tree protector around the bottom portion of the trunk.
  • Leave Ornamental Grasses for winter interest and keep blooms on shrubs like Hydrangea or flowers like Echinacea for added winter interest.
  • Reapply mulch in gardens to help with moisture retention and weed control.
  • Time to apply fall fertilizer on your lawn.
