Comfortingly Nutritious
When its cold outside the first thing you reach for (besides a cozy blanket) is comfort food. Instead of eating heavy, fatty foods this winter reach for this tasty chili! Its loaded with vegetables AND flavor. Here is a comfort food you won't feel guilty about eating.

DID YOU KNOW?

  •  In addition to the side options listed on our menu, students have the option to substitute those sides with carrot & celery sticks, small salad, fruit, or two of the same item.
  •  Sweet, it's Tuesday! - Just a reminder that desserts come with the hot lunch every Tuesday!

Remember Go, Slow, Whoa!

We have been labeling our school lunch items with the nationally known 'GO, SLOW, WHOA' concept for years. The purpose of this is to guide the kids to make healthier choices when making their own decisions at lunch and how often to eat certain types of foods. Each lunch item is individually labeled depending on sugar, salt, and fat content; as well as nutrient density of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. We encourage GO choices everyday, and we encourage you to do the same at home!

WHOA- Eat once in a while!

SLOW- Eat sometimes!

GO- Eat almost anytime!

Did you know?!

January is National Oatmeal month!

Oatmeal is an excellent source of fiber! Its also low in fat and can help lower cholesterol.  If your children aren't oatmeal eaters try these different variations!

HealthyBites

Healthy Bites is a monthly newsletter for our school lunch program's parents and school faculty. We provide updates on new menu items, service announcements, nutrition education opportunities, and promotions.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

My Plate:

The USDA promotes My Plate as an example of how our plates should look at every meal.  We tend to overload on protein and grains, and skimp on fruits, vegetables, and sometimes even dairy.

Check out www.choosemyplate.gov for more information!

Having your children follow MyPlate is an excellent idea, but when they are at school their trays don't look like the round plate shown above.  That is why we have come up with our new version... MyTray! MyTray follows the exact same guidelines as MyPlate, but is designed to look like the familiar school lunch tray allowing your child to use the MyPlate principles at school.  One of the most important concepts for your child to take away from MyTray is that half of their plate or tray should be filled with fruits and vegetables.  Start the new year with healthy choices for the whole family!
