September 2015
 Issue No. 50

Second Chance, Inc. is privileged to have deconstructed homes and buildings all along the East Coast. In a given month, one crew may be "unbuilding" a sprawling Florida beach property, while another salvages architectural elements from an historic Connecticut mansion. Whether in Northern Virginia or Philadelphia, we love saving perfectly good materials from the landfill no matter where they are!

Still, we are firmly a Baltimore, Maryland based social enterprise. We started here. Our corporate office is here, along with our 200,000 square foot retail center. We serve the underemployed here. The impact of our
mission never stays within the confines of this city, but it certainly always starts here!

Because of this, we get a little sentimental when the local big boys in the media single us out for recognition. Baltimore Magazine has done just that. Once again we're proud to be named a "Best of" winner for 2015!

Here is what the editors wrote about Second Chance this time around:

What we love most about Second Chance--aside from its nonprofit mission of workforce development and sustainability and that eye-popping Steve Powers "What Is and What Can Be" mural that adorns the building--is that among the functional items like couches, drawer knobs, and desks are one-of-a-kind standout pieces. We're talking about a Kthe Kollwitz lithograph and extraordinary cast-stone garden decorations. Salvaged and donated from mansions and historic buildings along the East Coast, a few of these items are so rare they seem like they'd belong in a museum.

Have you found a special "conversation piece" while shopping at Second Chance? Feel free to share a picture of it on our Facebook page for others to enjoy. The more we spread the word about who we are and what we do, the more we'll be able to Retrain, Reclaim and Renew. And that, dear friends, deserves a "Best of" award all by itself!

Gratefully,
-Your Second Chance Team

P.S. Feel free to check out some of the other Awards that Second Chance has been privileged to receive throughout the years.

As much as we love local press, we'll never turn down the opportunity to advance Retraining, Reclaiming and Renewing on a national stage! Drawing upon footage shot by the Voice of America for their video about Second Chance, enjoy this creative presentation of our mission by Maz Ali of Upworthy, an online social good organization with millions of followers.

CUSTOMER CREATION
A homeowner saw one of our crews deconstructing a house in her neighborhood. She checked us out and ended up buying the beautiful, old reclaimed Walnut we saved from the landfill. These are pictures of the library built from that salvaged wood in her home on Wyoming Avenue in Washington, D.C.!
