A remarkable time of transition is upon us yet again.... The snow will surrender to sun, and the frost will yield to flowers. The leprechaun is leaping, and the basketballs are bouncing. Know what that means? Rejuvenation is coming! As the season springs forward, so do many construction projects. It can be daunting to try to keep up with all the innovations in the business. However, one stands out, and it's not actually "building" at all. Among the smartest, fastest growing trends in the building industry is " unbuilding," commonly called " deconstruction." This process involves carefully taking apart a structure to reclaim its materials for reuse rather than relegate them to rubbish. Central to fulfilling the Second Chance mission is the deconstruction of homes that are entering the demolition phase. With landfill space in high demand and consumers embracing "green values," home deconstruction is the wave of the future.
Infographic from The Huffington Post's informative article, "Rethink, Recycle, Rebuild: How Deconstructing a Home Makes Environmental and Economic Sense" Beyond the environmental edge, people also enlist Second Chance to deconstruct because of the substantial tax benefit they receive. Homeowners donate their house to us for use in training our deconstruction employees -- most of whom have faced significant barriers to employment and are looking for a "second chance." The homeowner can then count the materials value of their home as a tax deduction. It is truly a win-win-win when materials are saved from the landfill, homeowners reap a financial benefit and lives are positively changed!

Our job trainees learn how to salvage tons of material from homes slated for demolition.

Many of our clients are referred to us by builders, agents and architects who embrace our progressive, philanthropic philosophy and also understand the potentially robust financial benefit to their clients. To learn more yourself, give us a call or fill out this form.
Second Chance deconstructs 125+ homes each year, and we travel the east coast from Connecticut to Florida bringing the reclaimed materials back to our warehouse at 1700 Ridgely Street in Baltimore. The next product you purchase for your project may have very well come from a home in Delaware, D.C. or Daytona!
Springing forward with you, -Your Second Chance Team

CREATIVITY FOR THE COMMON GOOD!
Two student groups, with support from the Neighborhood Design Center and reclaimed material donated by Second Chance, collaborated on the creation of a unique pair of beautiful, functional benches: Maryland's USGBC chapter (U.S. Green Building Counsel) and AIAS chapter (American Institute of Architecture Students). The process and finished products are currently on display in the Linear Gallery at UMD's Architecture Building, along with other examples of public interest design. In April, the waterproofed benches will be installed in their new home in Baltimore.
Great work giving new life to old lumber!

EVENTS IN MARCH
It was a joy last week to host the first Historic Homeowner Social jointly sponsored by Baltimore Heritage, Retrofit Baltimore and Live Baltimore! Connect with them to learn more about weatherization, historic tax credits, and home buying in Baltimore City.
We were also privileged to participate in Energy Justice Network's "Waste to Wealth: Bringing Zero Waste Business to Baltimore." Our President, Mark Foster, served on the expert panel who discussed regionally developing small, minority-owned companies in the reuse, recycling and composting sectors.
We're looking forward to hosting a meeting of the Baltimore Workforce Investment Board who is striving to create local employment opportunities, as well as the 21st Annual Baltimore Production Show for creative collaborators on the 26th.
Today's visit by Jimmy Uhrin of WBFF Fox 45's "Morning Break" with free breakfast put a smile on our faces. Stay tuned for a link to view the TV segment.
Of course we're also excited to again host the Baltimore Animal Rescue Center's "Canine...Feline...Drink Wine" event to give area animals a "second chance!" It's now sold out, but they have a waiting list for the March 29 event.

From the Baltimore Sign Guy: "Perfect fit for a c.1912 kitchen restoration (un-"remuddeling" from the 50's) in my Delaware weekend house. New marble slab on top. Re-built base cabinet so it now rolls on hidden wheels. Re-built latches, finished iron black with hinges. Second Chance has always been First Stop for me since you started." (Lots more DIY reuse ideas here!)
