 Issue No. 44

Since its inception,
Second Chance Inc. has been focused on workforce development. Our heartbeat is to create living wage "green collar" jobs and then train those who've faced employment barriers to succeed in those jobs. While we recognize the imperative of continual progress, we are pleased from time to time to acknowledge the fruit of our deconstruction job training program

For instance, through our partnership with the Mayor's Office of Employment Development between 2009-2013, we've been privileged to serve a host of young men (median age is 27 when joining us), 100% of whom were at or below the poverty level when joining us, and 68% of whom were previously incarcerated and desiring a new way of life.

To get more specific, consider these life-changing stats from this group during that five year period:
  • 95% of those who completed Boot Camp went on to complete the entire 16 week Deconstruction Training Program.
  • 100% of trainees earned their OSHA 10 certification, a transferable credential.
  • 95% of trainees earned their Certificate of Completion, demonstrating basic competency in deconstruction techniques and certain essential life and vocational skills.
  • 100% of program graduates found full-time employment earning a living wage at Second Chance after earning their Certificates of Completion.
  • 80% of program graduates remained employed at Second Chance or with another employer for at least 12 months after their initial hire date.
As you'll see in this newsletter, we rely on strategic partners and supporters to accomplish our workforce development objectives. And we certainly rely on YOU! Thank you for continuing to change lives by shopping, donating, volunteering, embracing deconstruction, and spreading the word.

"Wanted to share with you my finished project! I purchased a reclaimed 3 panel door from Second Chance and, with some trim and paint, turned it into a headboard! Love your store and what you do...can't wait to find my next project there."

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT EXCELLENCE AWARD

Since it's at the core of our mission and passion, Second Chance is honored to have been commended by Baltimore Workforce Investment Board as a finalist among businesses committed to workforce development in Baltimore City!
NEW SUPPORTER
With the celebration of Labor Day barely in our rear-view mirror, we're excited that Wells Fargo is helping us put more folks back to work through their recent $2500 contribution to our upcoming deconstruction training class! (To donate yourself, use our secure Pay Pal option or webform.)
WE TRAIN TEENS, TOO!

Through our partnerships with fine organizations like YouthWorks, we are able to offer vocational mentoring to urban youth before they find themselves in need of a "second chance."

Hats off to the 10 young men who completed their six-week summer job program!
