Each new year presents a fresh opportunity to both envision the future and reflect on the past. In fact, what a person or organization will strive toward in a new year is decidedly shaped by what has transpired during the previous year.
When the foundation is strong, there is confidence to boldly advance. Thanks largely to you, the foundation at Second Chance Inc. is indeed strong, and we anticipate even more progress in the days ahead!

The wave of positive momentum we are riding into 2014 is built on the successes of 2013. To give you a glimpse into these causes for celebration, we're pleased to report the following annual highlights:
- Occupied for the first full year and improved many facets of our new 200,000 sq ft retail, administrative and job training center at 1700 Ridgely Street in Baltimore
- Created more than 155,000 labor hours, many for previously unemployed persons
- Saved consumers some $3,200,000 through our retail warehouse while achieving record store sales
- Diverted over 11,000,000 pounds of waste from Mid-Atlantic landfills
- Over 60 adults and 20 teens received vocational and life-skills training
- Incorported more than 5,000 volunteer hours from individuals, groups and organizations like Serve the City and YouthWorks
- Expanded corporate and retail management teams to their most robust levels
- Donated time and materials to over a dozen fellow nonprofits, Arts groups, and philanthrophic organizations in the region
- Participated in a record number and breadth of events, trade shows, networks and public opportunities to share and extend our mission
- Deconstructed a record number of homes, barns and other buildings slated for demolition on the East Coast
- Received a record number of donations - over 1450 property pick-ups and drop-offs
- Assimilated 72 large-scale personal property donations valued over $5,000 each
- Implemented an electronics and ink recycling program
- Expanded our online community through, for instance, doubling our Facebook Likes to 6,000, engaging LinkedIn and becoming a key "reuse" influencer on Pinterest
- Featured in a several publications and honored by two awards, including a Best of Baltimore category winner again.
Let's celebrate these milestones together, because none of this would be possible without your support!
With a decade's worth of "earned wisdom" under our belt and an ever expanding community of supporters at our side, we are enthusiastically marching into another year of retraining, reclaiming and renewing. You march with us whenever you donate, shop, volunteer, give to, and share about Second Chance, and we are grateful for every step you take!
Learning from the past and looking to the future,
-Your Second Chance Team |

BEING GREEN IN 2014
Did You Know?
In addition to creating tax benefits for yourself and job training for others, the environmental benefits of deconstructing rather than demolishing your home are remarkable.
For instance, the Deconstruction Institute calculates that a typical 2,000 sq. foot wood frame home can yield 6,000 board feet of reusable lumber. That is equivalent to 33 mature trees or the yearly output of 10 acres of planted pine (7 football fields)! If demolished, that same home would introduce about 10,000 cubic feet of debris into the waste stream. And that's just the wood!
Go green in 2014 and call us to discuss the many benefits of donating your home or structure! |
