August 31, 2012 Issue No. 29
Greetings!

Second Chance Inc. wants to serve you better. Because we realize no person, program, product or process is ever completely perfect, we strive for progress - not perfection.  And yet, we are relentless in that pursuit of progress.  We figure that our mission is just too critical to be complacent!

Central to that mission is equipping unemployed people with the life and vocational tools they need to succeed in the sustainable trades of deconstruction and salvage retail.  So, we can't help but to experience deep satisfaction when we graduate a fine group of trainees like those pictured here.

Deconstruction Program Graduates - Summer 2012
You should feel good too, because your donations, gifts, and purchases directly support these folks.  Of course, they should be proud of themselves as well, since they worked very hard to complete a 640 hour training program and now have full-time jobs!

To improve lives like the graduates pictured above (and thus their families and communities), we strive to improve all our operations.  Currently, our retail division is in the midst of major upgrades. To make intelligent decisions, we really need your valuable insight. So, no matter how long we've been friends or how frequently you visit, would you please...

Take this 60-Second Survey!

Although we've come a long way in the past decade, we recognize there are many more subtle and substantial opportunities to improve.  We are grateful for your support along the journey, so that together we can continue to give genuine "second chances" to people, product and the planet!

Here's to getting better together....

Give Your Vehicle a Second Chance!

Do you have a vehicle in good condition that you'd consider donating to a worthy organization?  Did you know we'd love to give your car, truck or van the opportunity to have and to provide second chances?

We're always in need of mechanically sound vehicles to, for instance, transport our job trainees to and from job sites.  Because our nonprofit organization would use it for business purposes, you would be able to deduct the full Blue Book value

Our dream list includes:

  1. Toyota Prius Hybrids (or high MPG cars);
  2. Later model pickup trucks & SUVs; and
  3. Utility or passenger vans.
Please email or call Cari at 410-385-1700 x 110 to discuss.

IN THE OFFICE...

Salvage Secret

As many of you know, in January we made a big move from 1400 Warner Street to 1700 Ridgely Street in South Baltimore.  It's been a ride!  While we have a ways to go until we get the shop where we want it to be, it's been fun to make progress.

It's happening in our corporate office too, where about a dozen folks work largely behind the scenes to make the multiple facets of Second Chance "go." Over my (Pete's) shoulder hangs our newest artsy addition....a wall decorated in about 3 dozen re-painted shutters!

Creation by Dawn Kacey

During the summer storms, shutters and hardware were flying out of the warehouse.  But with some creativity, you can find lots of neat--and aesthetically pleasing--uses for shutters and such all year round!
