May 31, 2012 Issue No. 26
Greetings!  leadarticle

I couldn't help but smile a few days ago as I watched a couple of friends excitedly purchasing a number of old claw foot tub feet.  I knew they couldn't have so many "foot-less" tubs at home, so I asked what they were thinking of using them for.  "Bookends!" they replied.

An open mind, a little paint, some TLC and... WHAM...you now have gorgeous, functional products!  What makes it even better is that they might have been chucked in a landfill if they had not been donated or acquired during deconstruction.

In fact, did you know that demolition and construction debris fill up well over half of the landfill space in America?  We think that's a shame!  With a little creativity and determination, much of that and other "waste" material can find new uses in new places.  This process is known as "re-use" and "re-purposing."  In fact, one industry insider suggested we call our retail store a "repurposing center" in order to emphasize this socially responsible and increasingly popular recycling practice.

If you stroll through our 200,000 sq. ft. retail store, you're almost certain to find something that fits your project or that inspires you to start a new one....maybe even with products and materials you never considered before!  Our Red Dot Sale (see ad to the right) is a perfect time to give it a shot.

People are inspired by seeing and hearing how others have undertaken repurposing.  Have some photos of your project to share?  Email them to Pete or -- better yet -- post them on our Facebook page, where you'll see some other cool ideas we've received (see a recent one below).

To learn more about donating your items for others to reuse, check out our donation pages or contact Cari via email or phone: 410-385-1700 ext. 110.  Together, we will make a lasting difference!

Enjoy Half Off a Wide Selection of Items Until They're Gone!

Beyond providing job training to those who've experienced various barriers to employment, Second Chance also hires from the public marketplace for key positions on its corporate management team. We are now accepting applications for two such positions!

(1) The deconstruction sales personnel use their communication and relational talents to guide a diverse population of potential home donors through the process and benefits of partnering with us.

(2) The retail manager will bring successful experience--ideally from a building materials background--to oversee and improve the varied operations of our 200,000 sq ft warehouse.

If you (or someone you know) appreciates the
mission of Second Chance and may be interested in one of these rewarding roles, please prepare a resume and/or fill out an application. Then, send one or both items to us via:
(No phone calls please. SCI is an EOE.)

We now offer free wireless internet access in our warehouse!  Look for sc-guest when detecting networks.  No password is required.

Question:  Here's what we'd like to know... How might this service come in handy? What could you or a customer possibly use the wifi for?  Feel free to share your thoughts or see what others have posted on our Facebook page.
