March 12, 2012 Issue No. 23
Greetings!

In our last newsletter, the lead article discussed how Second Chance Inc. gives structures and material new life.  As you may know, however, we do that largely so we can provide people genuine "second chances" at new life!

To share that message with you, perhaps you should hear directly from one such beneficiary of the Second Chance mission.  Tyrek Jones is a more-than-capable spokesman....

"I've been working at Second Chance for about two years now, and my overall experience has been very unique and life-changing. It feels good to be a part of an organization that is not only creating jobs for people in the community, but is also making the earth a better place to live by keeping garbage off the street and out of the landfills.

Before I found Second Chance, I had been in a bit of a bind, because I had dropped out of college and could not find a job to save my life. Second Chance gave me that second life by taking a chance and hiring a young teenager with no life or work experience. Second Chance, along with my dedication and hard work, trained and molded me into the man I am today.

The part of my experience that is going to stick with me most is our life-skills training class. This class was the last part of our six week training. In this class, we learned how to solve problems on and off the job, how to handle different situations, time and money management and other things we needed for life. The part of the class that sticks out to me most is the discussions. We got the chance to discuss personal and job related situations that we had been faced with. Everyone would add input on how to approach and handle each obstacle. This was an excellent way to relieve stress, as well as to keep from being stressed.

I have really enjoyed my time at Second Chance and I am not alone. Second Chance to me does not only give a second chance to material, but also to people and dreams."  (This review appears at Great Nonprofits, where you can add your own review.)

As we shop, donate, deconstruct, and volunteer,  we provide meaningful second chances for people like Tyrek....and for our recent job training graduates (pictured left). Let's keep it up together!

CHANGING LIVES...
GRADUATION!
We are proud of this crew of eight men who just graduated from our intensive 16-week (640 hour) "green collar" deconstruction job training program!  Two others found gainful employment elsewhere even before the class was over. Each man is now a full-time employee of Second Chance, and we'll also help them build their careers elsewhere.

Taiwan Hill--pictured above with proud family members--is one of our March 2012 graduates.  He is a wonderful example of the positive outcome of our OJT program and partnership with the Mayor's Office of Employment Development. Read a little about Taiwan and this partnership here, and view a powerful video on our website or YouTube channel
