Organized & Productive
November/December, 2015

"In normal life we hardly realize how much more we receive than we give, and life cannot be rich without such gratitude. It is so easy to overestimate the importance of our own achievements compared with what we owe to the help of others."
(Dietrich Bonhoeffer)

As the holiday season launches into full tilt boogie, I'd like to offer some alternatives to the notion that we need to frantically do more things, buy more things, give more stuff, and have more stuff, to really have a successful holiday experience. Don't forget that your time and attention is far more valuable to the people you love than anything else. Long after the toys are broken, the clothes are outgrown, and the electronic gadgets are outdated, your gift of a piece of yourself will be long remembered. Make memories for people you care about by giving them the opportunity to enjoy an experience: theater or sports event tickets, lessons in something they want to learn or improve, a meal at a favorite restaurant, a few moments of relaxation at a spa for a busy mom (and a babysitting offer so she can really enjoy it!) Give of your time, give experiences that will enrich your loved one's lives, and they will remember that forever. If you're looking for a way to give a gift to someone that also gives back to someone else, here are a few suggestions that might spur some non-stuff-accumulating holiday inspiration!
Heifer International - give a family a cow, or chickens, and you give them not only food to eat, but a way to earn a living.
Doctors Without Borders - these incredibly selfless medical professionals give their time and talents to help those in underserved and sometimes dangerous places.
Samaritan's Purse - another wonderful organization that sends medical professionals around the world.
Operation Smile - provides surgery and specialized equipment for children born with cleft palates.
Global Giving - crowdfunding community that benefits non-profits, donors and companies that make the world a better place.
ASPCA - provides food and shelter for abandoned cats and dogs.
Little Kids Rock - provides musical instruments for students in low-income public schools.
MOWAA - Meals on Wheels America - provides meals to housebound senior citizens.
Create Now - provides field trips to museums, concerts and plays for high-risk youths.
LOCALLY:
The Tomorrow Fund (of Hasbro Hospital) - provides research, care and daily financial and emotional support for children with cancer and their families.
Amos House - feeding and providing shelter for the homeless in RI.
Charity Choice - give your recipient a gift card that allows them the opportunity to designate their favorite charity.
I hope that this brief list sparks some inspiration for a "stuff-free" holiday in this season of thankfulness and celebration!
Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more.
If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough.
(Oprah Winfrey)
This holiday season,
may you have more.
More joy,
more time,
more love,
more grace.
