Specialty Tools Make Wheel End Service Safer and Easier
Most truck repair facilities have sockets, torque wrenches, and dial indicators that are required for typical wheel end service and maintenance. In addition to these tools, there are some specialty tools available that make wheel end removal and repair activities much safer and easier.

Always refer to the ConMet hub service manuals when servicing your wheel ends. They can be found at www.conmet.com.

Before any service is attempted, the hub should be removed from the spindle. Keep in mind that the unique design of ConMet's PreSet Plus hub enables its integrated spindle nut to act as a hub puller. So, a hub puller is most likely not required. On all other hubs, there are cases when the seal or bearing cones may become stuck to the spindle, resulting in difficulty in removing the hub from the spindle. There are commercially available hub pullers that will make this job safer and easier. Also available are drive axle shaft pullers that will aid in removing a drive axle shaft that may be stuck to the hub.

Once the hub is removed from the spindle, maintenance may include bearing cup or wheel stud removal and reinstallation. There are specialty tools available for both of these service operations. Remember that aluminum hubs have special requirements for bearing cup removal and reinstallation. These requirements are outlined in the ConMet Service Manual available at www.conmet.com.

ABS tone rings come in a number of styles. Some of them must be heated and pressed onto the hub. Others are bolted onto the hub. A large majority of them are made of stamped steel and may be pressed onto the hub at room temperature. Consolidated Metco has a tool available for the installation of stamped steel ABS tone rings. This tool is available from ConMet as Part Number 107119.

In some cases it may be necessary to clean or repair the threads on the spindle. This is possible with a Universal Outside Thread Chaser.

Look for specialty tools for wheel ends from OTC (service-solutions.com) and Tiger Tool (tigertool.com). A few examples of their selection of tools are shown below and right. The suppliers and equipment listed are for  reference only and do not imply endorsement by ConMet.
