MCC facing funding gap for chaplaincy service

"MCC's chaplaincy programs in Alberta and Ontario are facing a fund gap following the Canadian government's decision to change how it supports community chaplaincy services for ex-prisoners."

"Community chaplaincy works.... If we weren't

there to support them, it would be easy for them to go back to their
old friends and a life of crime. We help them get connected with volunteers, churches and community resources."

MCC testifies before Foreign Affairs Committee on Cluster Munitions

Bill S-10, An Act to Implement the Convention on Cluster Munitions.

On October 25th, Titus

Peachey of MCC U.S. delivered a heartfelt address to this Senate committee. Titus has been advocating against the use of cluster munitions for over 30 years.

Bill S-10 in its current form "will at best, preserve the status quo by facilitating the ongoing use of cluster munitions, and, at worst, involve Canada's military directly in contributing to more human suffering."

You can watch Titus' testimony and committee discussion with him here, beginning at 1:16:00, and read MCC's supplemental written submission here.

Unfortunately, the committee passed Bill S-10 without amendments. The bill is now awaiting third reading in the Senate, after which it will be introduced into the House of Commons.

Quotation
of the Month

"Restorative justice says that crime is much more than the breaking of a law. It is the breaking down of human relationships in a community of people where

real people have harmed real people. And the question to ask is:
How can we make things better?"

Pierre Allard in A Little Manual of Restorative Justice.

Paul Heidebrecht

Ottawa Office Director

In October, Paul travelled to the Republic of Korea (South Korea) and the Democratic Peoples' Republic of Korea (North Korea) with Rod and Kathi Suderman, MCC's Representative for Northeast Asia.

He learned much about MCC's program work in these countries, which includes partnering with the Korea Anabaptist Center and the Northeast Asia Peacebuilding Institute in the South, and providing food assistance to orphanages and support for a conservation agriculture project in the North.

The trip also provided exposure to the realities of life on both sides of the border that continues to divide the Korean peninsula.
