Pasadena Health Department confirms five West Nile virus cases

The Pasadena Public Health Department announced that tests have confirmed five human cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) this month in its jurisdiction. The last previously confirmed case of WNV in Pasadena was in December 2012. WNV is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. Signs and symptoms may include fever, body aches, rash, nausea, vomiting, and headache. Up to about 80% of those infected have no apparent symptoms and can go undiagnosed. Severe cases, while rare, can include brain inflammation, paralysis or death.

REMINDER: Pasadena declares Level 1 water shortage

City Council in July declared a local water emergency by establishing a 20% conservation goal and implementing the City's Level 1 Water Supply Shortage Plan, with mandatory water waste restrictions. The Level 1 plan limits watering to three days per week in summer, one day per week in winter, and requires that leaks be repaired within 72 hours, in addition to permanent water waste prohibitions. PWP customers can report water waste by calling (626) 744-8888 at any time or report online via the Pasadena Citizen Service Center. Fines for repeat offenders can be up to $500 per violation for residential customers, and up to $1,000 per violation for commercial accounts.

PWP: "Water may be cloudy, but it's still safe"

Pasadena's Water and Power Department (PWP) assures customers that Pasadena water continues to be safe to drink despite recent cloudy and "harder" water. Due to the ongoing California drought, PWP's groundwater levels are low. As a result, PWP is receiving more water from the Colorado River through the Metropolitan Water District.

Gas pipline replacement project underway

The Southern California Gas Company has begun replacing a natural gas pipeline starting near Fair Oaks Avenue and Alessandro Place, continuing west on Bellefontaine and ending at S. Pasadena Avenue. The project will take approximately two months to complete. The north and southbound lanes along Fair Oaks, near the intersection of Bellefontaine, may be reduced to one or more lanes for approximately a week. For approximately one month, lane reductions may also occur along portions of Bellefontaine, between Fair Oaks and Pasadena Avenue, and sidewalk access access along the eastern portion of Fair Oaks will be closed between Alessandro Place and Hurlbut Street. If you have concerns about safety, call (800) 427-2200.

Library commemorates the 1930s American Dust Bowl

The Pasadena Public Library is currently hosting "Dust, Drought, and Dreams Gone Dry," a national traveling exhibition about the Dust Bowl, the disastrous drought and dust storms that wreaked havoc on the American Great Plains in the 1930s. The exhibit is on display in Central Library's Great Hall, 285 E. Walnut St. through October 9.
