WPRA annual meeting: Save our neighborhoods! 

The West Pasadena Residents' Association cordially invites you to its 52nd annual meeting on Wednesday, April 30 at San Rafael Elementary School, 1090 Nithsdale Ave. Parking is available in the parking lot behind the school; access is from San Miguel Road. 

 

Joining us will be a number of local dignitaries and officials including Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard, District 6 Councilmember Steve Madison, Assistant City Manager Steve Mermell, City Planning & Community Development Director Vince Bertoni, City Department of Transportation Director Fred Dock, Pasadena City Attorney Michele Bagneris, San Rafael Elementary School Principal Rudy Ramirez and Pasadena Unified School District Superintendent Jon Gundry.

 

5:30 p.m.

The evening starts with a reception and guided tours of the school. Also, during the reception period, attendees can enjoy light refreshments, while visiting with the many community organizations that'll be exhibiting.
  

6:30 p.m.

This year's main program will be dedicated to two of the most important issues facing our neighborhoods: 

  • The potential closure of San Rafael Elementary School, the last public school in west Pasadena.
  • LA Metro's proposal to extend the SR-710 freeway between Alhambra and Pasadena

Colorado Street bridge closed on Saturday for filming
Art Works Foundation and L.A. Grip will be filming a non-profit feature film on the Colorado Bridge on Saturday, April 26. The bridge will be closed to through traffic, beginning at 7 a.m. and will reopen to traffic at 7 p.m. Bicyclists and pedestrians will still be able to cross the bridge during the filming, although they may be stopped briefly for film takes.

 

TRAFFIC AND CROWD NOTICE

The Autism Speaks Walk, the largest autism fund-raising event in the nation, will take place on Saturday, April 26 at the Rose Bowl Stadium. Approximately 50,000 are expected to participate. Walkers and runners will arrive between 7-10 a.m. As a result, the Arroyo will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Brookside golf course will be closed. Vehicle access into the Arroyo will be via West Drive to Seco Street, and Washington Boulevard to West Drive. These streets will be open at all times for vehicular traffic, and barricades will be in place on the streets adjacent to the stadium. The bulk of the traffic will be incoming between 7:30-9:30 a.m. Expect traffic delays during this time.

Garden tours, events and classes set for this weekend 

  • ON SUNDAY: The Garden Conservancy will once again sponsor Open Days in the San Gabriel Valley on Sunday, April 27 from 10-3. Arlington Garden will again be the lead garden at which you may buy tickets, obtain maps and tour the beautiful Arlington garden before visiting the six private gardens on tour. All the gardens on tour are new to Open Days this year except for one garden in San Marino that was on many years ago. For more information, contact Martyn Belmont at martynbelmont@aol.com 
  • ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY: Plein air "paint out" at Arlington Garden. See Arlington Garden on Saturday and Sunday, April 26 and 27, through your own eyes ... and through the eyes of plein air artists, an event sponsored by Pasadena's Tirage Fine Art Gallery and Segil Fine Art Source. More than 20 artists will be in the garden from 10-5 each day taking advantage of the Garden's beautiful spring colors. Paintings will be for sale, so this is a perfect opportunity to purchase a fine oil or water color done by some of Pasadena's finest artists. Also, at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, the Mayfield Senior School Vocal Music Conservatory will sing.This weekend promises to be one of the most beautiful and pleasant times of the year, so drop by and enjoy the beauty and serenity of Arlington Garden while spring is at its best.   
  • ON SUNDAY: Japanese garden again opens to public, features harpist. The Storrier Stearns Japanese Garden again invites all to experience the tranquility that results from the timeless principles of Japanese garden design from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 27. Also, Pasadena resident and award-winning harpist Carolyn Sykes and some of her featured students will perform the soothing music of the harp beginning at noon. Reservations are not necessary, but can be made for $7.50 on the garden's website (click on blue headline). Admission at the gate is $10 (cash or checks only) and children 12 and under are admitted at no charge. The garden is wheelchair accessible. Sunday's event coincides with The Garden Conservancy's annual "Open Days" tour of outstanding gardens in Pasadena. 
  • ON SUNDAY: PCG presents composting class. Pasadena Community Gardens will hold a free (no charge) class in garden composting at 10 a.m. on Sunday, April 27 at Pasadena Community Garden, 721 S. Pasadena Ave. Leading the class will be Master Gardener Norma Bonilla, who has extensive expertise in helping others create a composting system in new growing spaces for community gardens, school gardens and local communities. Bonilla is a Certified Soil Advisor and the founder of  SOILOVE and co-founder of the Venice Community Garden and the Tarzana Community Garden. She is a Permaculture Design course graduate and a UCCE Certified Master Gardener. Street parking is available on South Pasadena Avenue, Bellefontaine Street and St. John Avenue. $6 parking is available across the street at Huntington Hopsital's Della Martin Parking Lot. City prepares for 41st annual Pasadena Mayor's prayer breakfast
The 41st Pasadena Mayor's Prayer Breakfast will be held on Wednesday, April 30, in the ballroom of the Pasadena Convention Center, 300 E. Green St. Doors open at 6:20 a.m.; the event starts promptly at 7 a.m. and concludes at 9 a.m. Parking is available at Paseo Colorado mall, with the first 90 minutes free, as is underground parking at the convention center ($10 flat fee/up to 16 hours.) 

 

Kidspace readies for grand butterfly release

Kidspace is celebrating the life cycle of the butterfly during its 18th Annual Grand Butterfly Release, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 3 and Sunday, May 4. This long-standing tradition at the museum gives Kidspace guests the opportunity to participate in the release of over 500 butterflies each day from the Museum's Stone Hollow Amphitheater.

 

Pasadena celebrates Earth Day on May 3

Celebrate nature, art, music, and community at Pasadena's 12th annual Earth and Arts Festival, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, May 3, at Memorial Park, 85 E. Holly St., at Raymond Avenue, and, across the street at the Armory Center for the Arts.

The Pasadena City Council Tuesday approved plans for a Beyoncé and Jay-Z concert in the Rose Bowl on August 2. That concert becomes the sixth concert added to the schedule for 2014, the most for a single year in the history of the Rose Bowl. Pasadena Now  

 

County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas "doesn't hold out hope" for a team coming to Farmers Field or any location in the region anytime soon. "I don't believe the NFL is serious yet," he said. "They're having a good time feigning seriousness. The only thing that they're doing is stoking their brand and having a whole lot of people who are financially endowed pursue them." The California Environmental Protection Agency has released a statewide list of census tracts most burdened by pollution, providing a first-of-its-kind ranking certain to pressure regulators to clean up neighborhoods with long-standing health risks. LA Times

  • Got the local news bug? Just curious about your city (and would like to share news with 1,000 or so of your closest friends), consider serving as a co-editor of Neighborhood Update. It will only take a few hours a week (on your own schedule) in the month or two a year in which you'd serve. We'll train you.
