Recycle your Christmas tree

Help protect the environment by recycling your Christmas tree. Place it curbside on your regular pickup day no later than Friday, Jan. 17. Remove stands, ornaments, lights and tinsel. Flocked and fire-retardant trees will be accepted but artificial trees will not.

 

Comment period extended for Devil's Gate sediment removal EIR

Due to the high volume of content in the Devil's Gate Reservoir Sediment Removal and Management Project Draft EIR and requests for additional time to review the document, the L.A. County Department of Public Works has extended the deadline for comments to Tuesday, Jan. 21 - an additional 15 days, and 90 days in total. Comments emailed to reservoircleanouts@dpw.lacounty.gov or mailed or faxed will be included in the final EIR.  

 

130 Years of Reading in Pasadena 

Join the festivities Saturday, Jan. 18, at 3 p.m. at Pasadena Central Library, 285 E. Walnut St., as they kick off a year-long celebration to commemorate 130 years of reading in Pasadena. Enjoy music, historical exhibits, a special cake and much more!  Events and activities at all Pasadena public libraries will be announced soon.   

 

State of the City 

The theme of Mayor Bill Bogaard's State of the City event Thursday, Jan. 23, at 6 p.m. in the new Center for the Arts at Pasadena City College is Arts+Innovation=Pasadena.

The Winter 2014 issue of the WPRA's quarterly newsletter, The News, is in the mail and will soon be arriving at more than 7,000 homes in the 91105 and 91103 ZIP codes. Features in this issue include updates about the status of San Rafael Elementary School (PUSD has decided to close it), the SR-710 freeway tunnel project (LA Metro has put it back on the accelerated funding list), the retrofitted and rehabilitated Fire Station #39 (it's open again!) and the County's plan to remove sediment from Devil's Gate Dam (the Arroyo Seco Foundation suggests the "slow program") ... and more. The WPRA needs you ... 

If you'd like to serve your community and do it with a group of your neighbors who are equally dedicated, the WPRA encourages you to join your neighborhood residents' association. If you live within our service area, we'd welcome your help. 

  • Got the local news bug? Just curious about your city (and would like to share news with 1,000 or so of your closest friends), consider serving as a co-editor of Neighborhood Update. It will only take a few hours a week (on your own schedule) in the month or two a year in which you'd serve. We'll train you.  
  • We have lots of opportunities to serve on one of our many committees:
    • Land use and planning
      If you care about how we use our land  
    • Education
      If you want to help save public education for West Pasadena  
    • Open space & conservation
      If you care about preserving open space and conservation of land and resources 
    • Membership
      If you'd like to help us continue to build our membership so we can do more
