WPRA in motion

The WPRA this week wrote to the:

  • City Council urging councilmembers to direct City staff to  prepare a plan for a thorough review of the SR-710 Draft Environmental Impact Report. The report is planned for release by LA Metro early in 2014 and is expected to be voluminous, technical and complex. Many of the alternatives especially the six sub-options for highway tunnels, would have severe and permanent impacts on our city and the quality of life for its residents. MORE
  • Planning Commission in support of the proposal to designate the South Grand-Covington Place area a landmark district. The letter noted that more than 80% of the property owners in that neighborhood have signed the petition requesting landmark district designation. MORE

 Pasadena's street trees provide $1 Million+ in air-quality benefits

A multi-month assessment of Pasadena's street trees has determined that the 58,267 Pasadena street trees used in the study provide an equivalent of $8.8 million in cumulative benefits each year, including a $6.94 million increase in local commerce and property values and $1.36 million in air-quality benefits. The replacement cost, if lost, would be more than $308 million, according to National conservation organization American Forests, alongside funding partners, the Bank of America Charitable Foundation and U.S. Forest Service. With the initial assessment complete, on Saturday, November 16, Bank of America volunteers will join American Forests and local partners for a tree-planting event at 679 Zanja St., beginning at 9 a.m., to help expand the urban forest and the benefits provided to the community. The event will be hosted Pasadena Beautiful Foundation.

The long-awaited Rose Bowl Stadium "brick" campaign is up and running. You now have an opportunity to make your mark at our iconic stadium ... literally. You can inscribe a brick with a personal message in remembrance of a person, event or game, a special memory. Each personalized brick will be incorporated into the iconic plaza in front of Gate A, leading to the main entrance of the stadium. Premium 8" x 8" legacy bricks ($425-$350) take center stage, as they will create the iconic rose pattern. The 4" x 8" ($100) bricks will make up the plaza bands surrounding the rose design. Premium rose brick options also include a keepsake replica brick. Replica bricks are made of the same material and inscribed with the same personal message as the installed stadium brick (premium replicas will be rose red). Become part of history "one brick at a time" to ensure the Rose Bowl's future for generations to come.

Mapping Pasadena's huge upcoming hotel explosion

"The 2,500 hotel rooms in Pasadena are woefully inadequate for a city so blessed with charm, culture, colleges, a famous football stadium and parade, proximity to LA, and a recently-expanded convention center, claims Pasadena Monthly. So thank the development gods that there are now six new hotels on the way in the 'Dena, which should just about double the number of available rooms.
