McAustin reverses view, now opposes SR-710 tunnel options

Pasadena Councilmember Margaret McAustin, in a recent letter sent to her District 2 constituents, has stated her unequivocal opposition to the tunnel proposals for SR-710.

"I cannot and will not support a 710 tunnel going through Pasadena, the impacts on our residents, our businesses and our children are too great. When people voted in support of the freeway, they were misled into thinking it would make life better; I firmly believe it won't. It would be a disaster for Pasadena. In conclusion, in the best interests of Pasadena, I will oppose the 710 Tunnel."

McAustin had previously voted against a resolution, proposed by District 6 Councilmember Steve Madison, calling on the City to oppose LA Metro's tunnel plans. That original vote, opposed by Councilmembers McAustin, Jacque Robinson and Terry Tornek, failed to pass by one vote.

PUSD starts process to evaluate sale/lease of San Rafael Elementary School campus

The Pasadena Unified School District Board of Education has approved the formation of a District Advisory Committee [often referred to as a 7-11 committee, which refers to the State requirement that it include no less than seven and no more than 11 members] to oversee a process that might lead to declaration of the San Rafael Elementary School campus as "surplus property." The committee's charge, according to the District, is to recommend whether the property should be declared surplus and, if so, whether it should be leased or sold. [Note: Last year seismic faults were discovered beneath the campus. Concerned parents have been working with the District to explore options for the school's future. These options include rebuilding the school on the current Nithsdale Road site or relocating it and its rapidly growing dual-language-immersion program, either to the nearby now shuttered Linda Vista Elementary campus or to another PUSD campus. The District has previously announced that the school will remain open, at its current site, through at least the 2014-15 school year.]
