Volunteers for Pasadena Hot Meals program
The WPRA has become aware of volunteer opportunities at the Jackie Robinson Community Center. Robin Salzer, of "Robin's Wood Fire BBQ," is the organizer of the Pasadena Hot Meals program and can use help on Wednesday evenings at the Center at 1020 N. North Fair Oaks. The program is 100% volunteer and provides an opportunity for residents and local groups to support fellow Pasadenans who who "need a boost." Reserve your place as a volunteer by sending an email to robinsinc@earthlink.net. Others may drop in on any Wednesday night at 5:30 to see what's happening and perhaps help.
BACKGROUND 1 - BACKGROUND 2Tell Alhambra how you feel about a pro "710 Day"On July 10, the City of Alhambra is planning to hold a "710 Day" in support of the 710 Freeway extension plans. While many of us may be unable to attend the "celebration" (it's being held on a Wednesday afternoon), there is a way you can clearly register your opposition to the freeway extension plan: Visit the Alhambra Source website and click on the third poll response: "I will not attend the celebration because I do not support the city's efforts to close the gap." While you can only vote once from your e-mail address, the WPRA encourages you to invite family members, neighbors and friends to vote.
- What has happened: California Gov. Jerry Brown has ordered an independent, system-wide review of Caltrans. The review was ostensibly triggered by a reorganization of various transportation-related departments into one agency. However, Caltrans has recently also come under scrutiny for its management of construction of the $6.4 billion Bay Bridge following reports of broken and suspect bolts on the bridge.
- What you can do: Help us capitalize on this opportunity by sending a message to both Gov. Brown and acting State Secretary of the Business, Transportation & Housing Agency Brian Kelly. Let them know that you applaud this investigation of Caltrans and that we, in Los Angeles County, also have questions and concerns about Caltrans' handling of the 710 Freeway tunnel project.

City schedules General Plan information meetingsTwo public General Plan community information meetings focusing on the Land Use and Mobility elements will be held in June (see below for dates). City staff will present the direction given by the City Council to study changes to the General Plan. Planners will share the background on what an environmental impact report (EIR) typically studies, describe how a General Plan EIR is different from other kinds of EIRs, and share news of future opportunities to provide input during the environmental review process. Although these meetings are not part of the environmental review process, staff will record any initial thoughts on subjects the environmental impact report should study. The meetings are scheduled for:
- Saturday, June 15, 9 a.m., at Pasadena City College's Circadian Room, Building CC, at 1570 E. Colorado Blvd.
- Thursday, June 27, 6:30 p.m., at Pasadena Presbyterian Church's Gamble Lounge, 585 E. Colorado Blvd.
GPUAC cancels June-July meetings The General Plan Update Advisory Committee, which is charged with guiding the city's General Plan community outreach program, has cancelled its meetings previously scheduled for Thursday, June 21, July 4 and July 18. Lather to share sales with Pasadena Community GardensOn Saturday, June 22, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., 25% of all product sales at Lather, 17 E. Colorado Blvd., will go to Pasadena Community Gardens (PCG). The funds will help PCG build a public community garden at 721 S. Pasadena Ave. Earlier this year, Lather, a Pasadena-based natural-ingredients beauty company, launched the partnership with PCG by hosting a "Giving Tree" fundraising promotion, which continues to October. PCG UPDATE: The approximately 55 Pasadena residents who are members of the community garden are now completing the site preparation and expect an early fall opening. "After seeing the critically acclaimed 2010 documentary "Waiting for Superman," which examined the failures of public education through the eyes of four children struggling to get into charter schools, former news producer and Pasadena Education Network member Dawn O'Keeffe was appalled. In response to the film, Dawn and her husband, Jim, a cinematography professor at USC, decided to make their own film about public education. After some grassroots fundraising, they hired 50 small camera crews to follow students, teachers, principals, employees and volunteers in the Pasadena Unified School District. The crews - 10 student-run outfits and 40 professional operations - followed one person at a time from the moment they sat down for breakfast to when they returned home." Pasadena Weekly

This one arrived in the afternoon while Rob was working in the backyard - one bee at first, then thousands, clustered into a ball the size of two footballs. It landed in a tree." LA Weekly
