City to host Fire Station #39 groundbreaking TODAY
A groundbreaking ceremony for the seismic retrofit and rehabilitation of Fire Station 39, 50 Avenue 64, will be held on Saturday, March 2. The program, which the public is invited to, begins at 11:30 am. A reception follows, as well as an opportunity to check out a fire engine and equipment, bring a book for and take a book from a book exchange (hosted by the San Rafael Library Associates), and consume a spectacular firefighter-roasted hot dog.

The terms for Pasadena City Council districts 3, 5 and 7, and for the Pasadena Unified School District Board of Education district seats 1, 3, 5 and 7 (most of West Pasadena) will be up for election on Tuesday, March 5, 2013. (Following the approval of Measure A in 2012, PUSD is now divided into seven geographic sub-district areas. Beginning with the March election, board members will be elected by voters residing within a specific geographic sub-district within the District.)

City to host lightening ceremony in Defenders Parkway
The public is invited to attend a ceremony on Thursday, March 7 at 6:01 pm to commemorate completion of the Defenders Parkway lighting project and to recognize the Tournament of Roses for funding the project. A reception will follow the ceremony. Defenders Park and Defenders Parkway are located at Orange Grove and Colorado.

710 FREEWAY EXTENSION

On behalf of the WPRA board, President Bill Urban wrote to LA County Supervisor Michael Antonovich and the Metro Board, urging them to withdraw the 710 freeway extension tunnel alternative and to focus on modern solutions, rail for cargo and public transit options, such as the Gold Line. Note: If you wish to receive regular updates from the "NO 710" group, send a request to unitedagainst710@gmail.com.

District 6 Councilmember Steve Madison has invited Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich and Metro staff to participate in an open forum to "articulate Metro's position and aims," as it relates to the various proposals to extend the 710 Freeway. If you support Councilmember Madision's suggestion, write your own letter to the County Board of Supervisors, in care of Supervisor Antonovich at fifthdistrict@lacbos.org, and copy him smadison@cityofpasadena.net.

Slow down on S. Pasadena Avenue for safety, at least while Caltrans studies speeds

Anyone who travels on S. Pasadena Avenue may wonder if it's Pasadena's Autobahn. Although the posted speed limit is 30 MPH, most autos travel 50 MPH or higher. Caltrans will soon be measuring speeds on the street to determine the "proper" speed limit for the street. Please drive within the current posted speed limit to help ensure the State will maintain a manageable and safe speed limit.

ROSE BOWL EIR LAWSUIT

The WPRA Board of Directors supports a lawsuit filed recently by the Coalition for Preservation of the Arroyo that challenges City Council's certification of an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) related to the potential temporary lease of the Rose Bowl Stadium by a National Football League team. If you share that view, the WPRA encourages you to contribute to the related legal fees. It's easy with EZ Donate on the WPRA website. And don't forget to check the box to indicate that your donation, which will be tax-deductible, is for the Rose Bowl EIR lawsuit. MORE

The WPRA needs you ...

If you'd like to serve your community and do it with a group of your neighbors who are equally dedicated, the WPRA encourages you to join your neighborhood residents' association. If you live within our service area, we'd welcome your help.

  • Got the local news bug? Just curious about your city (and would like to share news with 1,000 or so of your closest friends), consider serving as a co-editor of Neighborhood Update. It will only take a few hours a week (on your own schedule) in the month or two a year in which you serve. We'll train you.
  • We have lots of opportunities to serve on one of our many committees:
    • Land use and planning. If you care about what, how and where it gets built.
    • Education: If you want to help save public education in West Pasadena.
    • Open space & conservation. If you care about preserving open space and conservation of land and resources.
    • Membership. If you'd like to help us continue to build and serve our membership so we can do more for our members.
If you'd like to chat about ways we could help you become more involved or, more likely, more effective (by helping us), send an email to WPRA President. Tell us about your interests.
