Buffalo - There's so much to love

Historic Polonia Rising

In Buffalo, we know it's spring when butter lambs begin grazing on dining room tables and you can't find a parking place at either the Broadway Market or the Botanical Gardens. There's more than a week of festivities coming up!

The epicenter of all things involving eggs and pussywillows is Historic Polonia. Broadway Fillmore Alive has been the voice of this beleaguered neighborhood since 2006 powered by the tireless community activist Chris Byrd. BFA has promoted all things Polonia, especially the Broadway Market, and has supported the preservation historic churches like Corpus Christi, St. Stanislaus and Saint John Kanty/Saint Adalbert Basilica, long before it was cool to do so. A recent "crowdfunding shirtraiser" generated nearly $10,000, enough to contribute more than $3,000 to each of these three churches. "Mass Mobs" are generating interest in these houses of worship and others across the city.

But with the resurgence well underway, there are new voices adding to the conversation and new energy coming to the cause. A Facebook page for the
Historic Polonia Preservation District is collecting and sharing information about the District with an eye toward obtaining an official historic designation. Saving 595 Fillmore is underway, and the Bison Distillery has just opened at 502 Lombard. The Buffalo Young Preservationists are holding a BYP Happy Hour at the new Market Bar (at 232 Gibson Street) on Tuesday, March 31. The Central Terminal Restoration Corporation just put out an RFP for the development of portions of this extraordinary landmark.

So as you make that pilgrimage to the Broadway Market for a butter lamb, some tasty chrusciki, beautifully painted wooden eggs, or loaves of braided bread, remember to support this gem and the neighborhood it graces during the remainder of the year. And as you join Citybration in the Dyngus Day Parade and perhaps stop at the historic Adam Mickiewicz Library and Dramatic Circle before heading home, think of a phoenix slowly rising and come up with how you can be part of the process.

Then let's think of ways to extend this energy and enthusiasm to other parts of Buffalo's neglected East Side. Every one of our neighborhoods has a history. Let's use our illustrious past to help forge a brighter future for all of Buffalo.

See you at the Market!
Read on for highlights of just some of the things to see and do over the next few weeks.

Buffalo Exchange Retrofitting a Rust Belt capital
By Catherine Tumber in The Baffler, No. 27, 2015
A very smart, in depth, analytical look at Buffalo and WNY, its ups and downs and devastating mistakes, made over more than a century. It applauds the Green Code, excoriates sprawl and the forces that lead to it. It recognizes Buffalo's heroes, past and present, and even identifies some of our villians. Read to the very end to discover the perversity of STAMP. If you care about Buffalo's past and future, this is a must-read.
Buffalo Myth: Our Stories, Our Home
By Colin Dabkowski on Buffalo.com on March 20, 2015
"The most honest play about Buffalo in years won't be appearing on any of the city's major stages. At least not yet." Dabkowski calls Buffalo Myth "a probing and sensitive critique of the city's simplistic 'resurgence' narrative based on four months of interviews with activists, political leaders and East Side residents" ...by juniors and seniors at Nichols School. Read the tale of how this play came to a high school stage last weekend. Then let's applaud for an encore.
Mysteries at the Castle: Making of an Artist, Secret Sonar, Fairy Flag
The Travel Channel on March 20., 2015

"An earth-shattering problem, an architectural genius, and a life-saving innovation come together at the remarkable Graycliff Estate in Derby, New York." Filming took place at Graycliff last October and the segment opens with scenic shots of downtown Buffalo. It focuses on Wright's time in Japan, where he lived and worked immediately prior to designing Graycliff. This segment will air again on Thurs, March 26 at 11:00am.

Bunnies & Butter Lambs
Easter and Dyngus Day collide every year in Buffalo. As you head to the Broadway Market, remember you can beat the crowds by also buying locally online!

How about a sweet butter lamb that will last longer than the meal, a cute pierogi with no filling, a bright red Polish buffalo to proudly announce your heritage, a golomke ornament that requires no cooking, or some calorie-free sponge candy? These ornaments are fun all year long.

For the smallest bunny on your list, how about The Swing?
This classic verse by Robert Louis Stevenson has been beautifully re-illustrated by local artist Heather Lynn Harris for today's tiniest future readers.

The Flockless Shepherd by Buffalo author Gary Friedman is another great alternative to jelly beans. This engaging and inspirational novel set in Buffalo is just right for the Easter season.

Check out Citybration t-shirts and other fun Buffalo Stuff for great gifts. We ship to anywhere!

Buffy's Blog

Plan to march with Citybration in the Dyngus Day parade on Monday, April 6! We will meet at 5:00pm at Superman Corner. Where is that? Why at the intersection of Clark and Kent streets, of course. Let's really make a splash this year. Wear red!

Soup-Fest was awesome! Jerry, Chuck, Paula, Barbara, Lorraine and Christian all got to attend the event AND help me promote Buffalo as a great place to live. Nearly 200 more people will receive this eLoveLetter every week because of them, and they took tons of pictures of enthusiatic Buffalonians with me, too.

I have also been invited to help celebrate the Grand Opening of Buffalo Game Space on the 4th floor of the TriMain Center on Saturday, March 28, and I will be meeting and greeting guests at the Cherry Blossom Ball on April 2. Join me?

If you are interested in volunteering, e-mail me to receive the weekly Citybration Volunteer Alert and plan to attend the next Citybration Team meeting at Ashker's (Elmwood and Potomac) on Monday, March 30 at 5:30-6:30pm. If you can't attend but want to be on the Team, just drop me a line.

Thanks to our Citybration Advisory Board, sponsors, partners, advertisers and volunteers! Perhaps your company would like to support Citybration, too. If so, just let me know!
