Our Thanksgiving Tips

Here are a few tips, culled from the internet and personal history, that will make the big feast go more smoothly:
  • Planning is good. Figure out your menu and ingredients over the course of the weekend, get your shopping done as early as possible (which will be easy with your CSA coming a day or two early, right?), and accept the fact that you might forget something. Have someone on tap who can make that last-minute run to the store.
  • Clean out the fridge. If you've got odds and ends from earlier CSA boxes, make quick use of them with these tips from Sheila--lots of mix and match options, for now and later.
  • Plan backwards from mealtime to determine steps: what needs to be done by 3pm? What can be finished by noon?
    Watermelon radishes
    Watermelon (Red Meat) Radishes
What can be done the day before?
  • Do prep-work ahead of time. Some (non-lettuce) salads, slaws and soups do well after a couple of days in the fridge. Bake pies and other deserts a few days before the feast and store in the fridge or freezer. Chop onions, garlic and other ingredients and store them in the fridge. Many appetizers can be assembled the day before as well.
  • Set the table ahead of time. Plan the table settings, figure out what dishes and utensils you'll be using to serve everything, and set the table the night before if you can.
  • This one seems weird, but bear with me: take a shower two hours before guests arrive. Just set a timer to go off, and, at that moment, hand everything off to a trusted loved one for just 15 or 20 minutes of alone time. Try it!
  • Clean dishes as you go. People are always looking for ways to help out in the kitchen, and this is one place where they can do the least damage. Plus, starting the meal with a clean kitchen will make you feel like a champion.
  • Don't freak out. Many holiday meals have been marred by too much stress in the kitchen, and it's up to you to create a kitchen situation that is low-stress and fun. Hopefully some of these tips will help with that!
Feel free to get in touch with us on Facebook if you have any questions or if you'd like to offer up tips of your own!

WHAT'S COOKIN'

Thanksgiving edition

Where to start? How about leeks, which make their sole appearance this week. Braised Leeks or Black-Eyed Peas with Leeks are great, simple side-dishes.

A little more involved, but worth the trouble: Pumpkin and Feta Savory Muffins. As we've said, swapping squash for the pumpkin works great.

A surprisingly good, simple carrot dish that will impress your guests: Carrot Mash with Orange and Mint

Watermelon radishes can be sliced thin and roasted to make Watermelon Radish Chips (below), or just cut thin slices into wedges for a crudite or relish tray.
