Wk 27 | Summer 9    Sneak Peek    Tu-Th | Sept 3 & 5
CSA box summer 2011
There are only four more weeks of the Summer Season.
Our Fall Season (Oct-Dec) will include winter squash, carrots, beets, radishes, onions, leeks, sweet and storage turnips, plenty of lettuce, kale, spinach--and much more!
If you haven't signed up for Fall yet, you can do so
by updating your membership here.
What's in a sneak peek?

It's our best guess on a Friday of what will be available to put in the boxes on the following Monday and beyond. This past week was another reminder of how difficult it is at this time of year to predict what will be available. As Chris has been saying, for the most part, when we have lots available, we've been putting lots in the boxes regardless of how much over value the boxes become. Still, a wide variety of factors come into play: field conditions, staffing, quantities, crop condition, storage-ability, and more.

For example, this past week, our original hopes for broccoli all around morphed into our internal planning for broccoli on Tuesday with lacinato kale on Thursday, and ended up with neither on Thursday (making it up with slicing tomatoes which had been absent in the Tuesday boxes); due to some nutrient imbalance, the kale just wasn't up to snuff so it will be tilled in to make way for planting something else in those beds. Potatoes (a storable item) were pushed forward to a time when the additional value is needed.

These are just examples of some of the decisions that are made. Our sneak peeks have been accurate in the past more often than not, but that should be considered the exception, not the rule. Just think of it as a best guess...which leaves room for some surprise on CSA delivery day.

We're playing it safe this week, listing just a few relatively sure things, and leaving room both for large quantities and last-minute additions based on conditions on the ground.

If you are meal-planning around your box and need to get a closer idea over the weekend of whether a particular item is likely, please don't hesitate to call or email me.
