CSA box summer 2011
This is summer in a box! We're hitting our stride...hope you enjoy it.

What's your favorite vegetable?

The converse of that, of course, is what vegetables to you dislike, have an allergy to, or truly hate? In the process of your online signup, we ask you about your likes and dislikes, and we get a wide variety of responses:
  • we dislike radishes
  • my stomach can't handle sweet peppers
  • I hate eggplants!
  • don't include turnips
  • no rutabagas, please; they'll go to waste
...and just about any other permutation you can imagine.  Probably at the top of the list are radishes, turnips, and eggplants. These are no doubt often tried-and-true dislikes, but I'd wager that some are holdovers from well traveled grocery store varieties, mushy and overcooked preparations, or bad childhood memories at Grandma's table.

Whatever your reason, we urge you to (1) give it a try, (2) cultivate a friend or neighbor who will appreciate those things you don't like, and/or (3) compost any excess. Be aware that all of the CSA boxes are prepared at the farm with all of the items in the box; any removals from the box are done by your driver at the point of delivery. This means that any item removed (if not taken home for use by the driver) is likely to be thrown out.

We use your preferences as a guide, but not as a definitive list of what you will or won't receive in your box in a given week. This premise has long been included in the FAQs on our website. As it happens, during the Winter Season, we found that we were a bit short on beets; knowing that there are people who really don't like beets, we found those who stated their dislike of beets and made a substitution in those boxes. A win-win, but one over which we had some control.

All that said, we are committed to omitting items to which you have indicated a severe allergy. In most instances those items are simply removed, but if you need a separate box prepared that has not been "tainted" with an item that would cause you a serious health problem, please let us know.

As our CSA membership grows--and our list of add-on offerings grows--I'll have to get a bit stricter about removing unwanted items or making substitutions. As always, feel free to give me your feedback or call to discuss our rationale. Thanks for your support!

WHAT'S COOKIN'

Keep it simple, keep it cool. This SunGold & Basil Caprese Salad is courtesy of our pal Paula (currently of Chicago Indoor Gardens, previously of Tiny Greens, and before that...Tomato Mountain). Slivers of basil mix with fresh mozzarella, EVOO, and a touch of your favorite vinegar--but just a touch so as not to overwhelm the candy-sweet tomatoes.
