Community Supported....Fishery?!
I've recently become aware of a CSF specifically serving the Midwest. Sitka Salmon Shares brings together small boat fishermen (and women) from Southeast Alaska and Midwest consumers. How? A former Knox College professor, Nicolaas Mink, has helped these fishermen make the Midwest connection, and has the line-caught wild salmon blast-frozen and flown to O'Hare, from where it's delivered to customers' homes by a small army of Knox College students (including my nephew Will). Professor Mink brought a group of students to Tomato Mountain for a farm tour a couple of years ago, and Will worked at the farm briefly last summer--that's the extent of the Tomato Mountain connection. If it interests you, act fast--the deadline for this season's shares is..... now.

WHAT'S COOKIN'
|
Kohlrabi! If you're new to CSAs, chances are that you're new to kohlrabi. I'd bet that fear of kohlrabi is what keeps some otherwise adventurous folks from trying a CSA. Fear not! Eat 'em raw, make a slaw with apples, cabbage or carrots, cut into sticks for dipping...or for making fries! Here's a recipe for Chili-Dusted Kohlrabi Fries but they'd be nice with sea salt, too.
