Tempting you with turnips
If you're new to turnips, give them a try. If you love them or think you hate them, try something new. Here are a few ideas to keep you wanting more turnips in your CSA box. These recipes are for the larger, purple-top variety you'll be seeing in this coming week's box, but when you receive the sweeter Hakureis, they would work instead or in addition. Most can be "cut" with potatoes, though the potatoes will generally require less cooking time.
* Mashed. Add a few turnips to potatoes for mashing. Or mash and bake as in these Amish Turnips*.
* Gratin. Thin-sliced and topped with grated parmesan, Turnips Gratin* makes an elegant side dish.
* Soup. This velvety Pureed Turnip Soup* is a good cold-weather meal starter--or a meal in itself.
* Cake. Who knew? Hide the turnips--from kids, spouse, or yourself--in this moist Gourmet Turnip Cake*. The aroma of nutmeg and cinnamon will fool even the pickiest turnip naysayer.
