Storage crops make up the bulk of this first Winter share, including the last of our sweet Hakurei turnips. If you're new to those, try slicing them into rounds or sticks for dipping into ranch dressing or your favorite veggie dip, or just eat a whole turnip raw like an apple. They just might have you thinking differently about turnips!
As Chris mentioned at the end of the last season, we expect to have spinach in 4 or 5 of the Winter boxes. While that could have or should have included the first box, the weather hasn't cooperated.
Southern Wisconsin experienced a significant snowfall in late December that never materialized in the Chicago area. Snow and cold don't affect spinach, which holds up very well in cold and even freezing conditions. But "holding up" or surviving the cold is different than
growing, and what it does need is sunlight in order to grow.
Between snow-covered hoop houses and a long patch of grey skies, there just hasn't been much sunlight. There's sun in the forecast so we expect to see some growth start back up. And the chill on the spinach in the meantime will have thickened and sweetened it up.
A note on box sizes. For the Winter share, we'll generally be using one size down from our usual box sizes. So, for instance, if you're used to receiving the Small size box, the Winter Small size may be packed in our usual Solo size box. |
